I've been looking at make & model options for a 45 ACP. There 'may' be an opportunity to pick up a S&W model 4506. I've had a few 1911's and have recently come a S&W 4506 but I know nothing about them. Question, what are the opinions, pro's and con's of the 4506??

Big pistol to hold compared to the 1911....

had one for years & loved it.
big, clunky & built like a tank.
never a stoppage & reasonably accurate .
i just never got used to that long double action trigger.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess from what I have handled in 45 ACP, the Colt Commander size, all steel or stainless steel, is one I like. I know the 4506 is a sizeable 'handful' but I've never fired one so I was wondering what the general take on it is. Before I possibly decide I 'need it' I thought I'd see what the opinion on it is. Bang for the buck how is it or is there something considerably better for the same money.

Personally, I find the S&W auto pistols to have a high bore axis. In that your grip on the frame is lower in relation to the front & rear travel of the slide when firing, say compared to the Glock or even the 1911. Translates into more perceived recoil and muzzle flip. But tends to be off-set by the pistols weight. For me anyway. But they are built very well. Reliable. And accurate if you do your part.

I had a S&W 1006 10mm before and still have a 4006, double stack, .40 S&W:

4506

It's only draw back, is that it is a big heavy gun. So if your planning to carry it concealed, you may have to think twice. The extra weight on the other hand is a plus, and makes it is a pleasure to shoot, I had the adjustable sight version and I found it extremely accurate, reliability is flawless, as most 3rd generation Smiths. Heck, even the double action on this model is smooth, at least on the last two I owned. Grip is subjective, so I can't really comment other than it's a single stack and seems to fit well on most hands. It's a keeper in my eyes.

I had a 4506 and sold it for one reason - the trigger did not have double strike capability. Other than that, it was a good pistol.

S&Ws are great pistols. My first gun ever was a S&W 410S .40 :) They're big, heavy, non-nonsense pistols. Great for target shooting and combat, but not so great for CCW.

Got a 4506 last year and it quickly became my favorite 45. Lost my job and had to thin the heard earlier this year, but for my 45's I only kept the 4506. It's big heavy, but the most accurate pistol I have. It shoots great, great value for the money, and a dream to hold. If you can get some 10 round mags for it, and then it's a great IDPA pistol.

When things pick up I want to get a 1006 and a 5906 to add to the 3rd generation pistol collection. Would love a 4006 too, but that is only available as a prohibit since it only has a 4" barrel.

Hope this helps.

I should mention, my 'intent' on reloading for the 4506 should I get it will be minimal. For the most part I plan on shooting ball ammo and I'm not really interested in 'chasing' brass. If I want to reload for a handgun I'll shoot a revolver. I may do a bit of reloading for it, but again, it'll be minimal. So, is the 4506 a good choice for ball ammo?

S&W 4506 like all 3rd generation, can feed everything reliably, even empty case, so ball ammo is no prob for this one. I have a 4505(blue version of the 4506) and it is one of my best .45.

It should digest .45 ACP ball ammo like there's no tomorrow.... ;)

Thanks guys:). It's starting to look more & more like I 'need' ;)it.
Question. After a quick check of the S&W website, I don't see that model listed so I'm assuming it has possibly been discontinued?? If so, any ideas as to why?

I have my 4506-1 for more then 5 years now and I can say is one of the best 45 autos I get my hands on (exemption 1911's).
It's build like a tank, eat any kind of ammo and shoot super accurate...fully recommended.

Planning to carry it concealed??? Are you nuts? He's a retired pulp mill maintenance supervisor, and we live in Canada! What are you encouraging here?

alot of members here have US CCW permits :slap:

Please explain what 12(6) means . Bob

when the government outlawed pistols and revolvers with barrels shorter than 105mm (also .25 and .32 cal handguns), those who were in possession of them at the time got a special class on their firearms licence "12.6" it allows them to continue to own, buy and sell 12.6 class handguns.
