OK so here's the scoop I bought a Win model 94AE 30-30, serial #544****. I know it's a post 81' and not the 20" carbine but thats about it. It has a 24" round barrel, long forearm stock and full length mag. It has no checkering and the barrel band near the muzzle only loops over the mag and attaches to the bottom of the barrel. It has a blade front sight and no cross bolt safety. I can't find any info on it.....I was told it is the "rifle" and not the "carbine" version.....but why can't I find any info on it? Winchester website doesn't show any versions that look like mine and search engines bring up nothing that looks like it. To me it looks identical to a "Trails End" but has the longer barrel and different barrel band. If you know any info please share.

It could very well be a "parts" gun....made from various parts from various guns that someone had lying around. many of the gun shows have such articles and some are said to be authentic"special " editions, but if in doubt, walk away. many special edition rifles and carbines have been "copied" with parts by dubevious dealers. 24 inch barrels ( except for 1892s)are rare and demand high dollar amounts. But in the 80s?????? Only way perhaps is a commemorative...and it would have special numbers stamped and usually the commemorative name it was made for stamped somewhere on the action or barrel. and in the 80s, the barrel should have had a ramp style front sight. Please correct me if I am wrong.

The rifle looks as new no buggered screws or anything. I did find in the "Winchester timeline" in 1987 a long barrel rifle was manufactured .....perhaps this is it! I'm still digging.......I can post pics soon.

In the '80's Winchester FINALLY responded to 40 years of customer requests...sort of. People wanted the old 1894 Rifle model back. Unwilling to go whole-hog and make the rifle forend and nosecap or curved buttplate. Winchester offered the 94 Long Barrel model. Carbine-style barrel bands, forend and buttplate, 24" barrel. I believe the 24" 7-30 Waters had come out a couple years before.
In the last couple years Winchester made the 94, they called it the "Classic" I believe; it retained the 24" barrel and the carbine-style hardware but had a pistol-grip stock. It was offered in .32 Special for a couple of years as well.

So Kilo, are you confirming what I have is in fact the factory long barrel rifle released in 1987 by winchester? Any idea on the # of rifles made? I can't find any info pertaining to serial #'s after 1981 to find out exactly what year it was manufactured......however the gun shop around the corner (not who i bought it from) told me it was a factory 94 "rifle".

My guess from the pics is that it is indeed a factory rifle.
Finding out just exactly when it was built may be a bit of a challenge. Winchester made many, many different models of the '94. Many limited in production, and that carried on into USRA as well. Tracking serials in the last few decades seems to be difficult.
You can get a rough idea this way:

1982 ended with number 5,103,248.
estimate after 1982 by adding 100,000 per year.

I found another on the web identical to mine a Winchester Collector in Ohio has it and I spoke with him. His is NIB and said he's seen a few in 7-30 waters, but his is the only other one he's seen in 30-30. He said it is a rare standard model 94AE no safety, 24' round barrel, long foreend, muzzle end barrel band over the mag and dovetailed into the barrel as mine is.

He is a collector and claims to have had every version of winchester ever built since 1960's.....I know hard to believe but looking at the pics he has, I believe it. I found through winchestercollectibles.com check it out he has apparently sold most of his collection off now. I guess I should hang on to this one!

I saw these offered for years in the Wholesale Sports catalogue....I guess they just didn't sell. The ones I saw were cross-bolt safety models, though. Nice rifle. I really wanted to buy one of these, but the safety put me off.

1986 started by 5409249 and 1987 started at 5463790.

I think they called it the Model 94 Standard Rifle, cal. 30-30 W, 32 Spl (1964-1973 and 1992-97), 7-30 Waters (introduced in 1987)and 44 Mag. (196? to 1970) - angled ejection being standard from 1982. Barrels 20" or 24" (1987-88)... so your being made mid to end of 1986 surely makes it a 1987 model.... Straight stock and barrel band on forearm.
The Standard model was made 'til 1997

To serialize it, I think you can find some infos from Blue Book pub.

I know back then I used to peruse the Winchester catalogues religiously. I wanted a M94 with a 24" pipe very badly. In '87, the only 24" rifle in the 'Canadian' catalogue was the 7-30 Waters version.

I ordered a 7-30 Waters 24" M94 from Frenchy's/Barrottos. When it came in, months later, I knew the from moment the gent brought it from the back there was going to be trouble. The box was 4" too short....and sure enough, there was a 20" carbine inside, in 7-30.

I was so choked I went to Guncraft and bought a new Model 70 Featherweight in 7x57.

I know that the U.S. Winchester listings I have seen since do list a 'Standard Rifle' with a 24" barrel in '87 and '88, in 30-30. I have never seen one till now. I think they may have been for U.S. distributorship only. But a savvy dealer like Elwood Epps for example could no doubt get one.

I think yours is real, and rare.

I know its real through my research, it corresponds with the serial #'s in the 1987 era and speaking with this gent in Ohio confirmed my thoughts. Although I wasn't totally aware until then that the 7-30 or 30-30 was in fact a rare beast. I have searched the net for alot of hours looking for one the same as mine and finally found one that a collector has and says he's never seen another. I was gonna sell it but I'm definetly going to keep it now. Thanks for the info guys.

Had the exact same gun in the early 90's. Quite rare, winchester made a run of 30-30s on the same model as the 7-30 Waters, but without the checkering.
