I fired a steyr not to long ago and just loved it. It's not exactly in my price range, that is why I started this thread. I am aware that everything to do with this caliber is expensive, but I do have a pile of .50 brass and bullets that I can reload(once I, or if I buy the press kit). I've looked around various sites and couldn't find anything less that $5000. Is there any other brands available other than the Steyr or custom builds? Thanks

Thanks for the response guys. I heard there was a cheap single shot .50bmg made in BC or something that was fairly cheaper than the Steyr. I almost bought a Russian PRTD 14.5mm once and regret not buying it. It was $1800, but ammo was going to be an issue, until someone told me you can have the brass made............ Well I didn't know anything like that at the time.

I have had the pleasure of shooting various 50's at my LR shoots over the years.

The Barnard actioned boomer was by far the most accurate platform I have shot in this chambering. Now I don't know what load development was done with the other rigs - Hey, you don't get too critical about shooting someone else's ammo :)

ABC bullets in a Barnard action. Don't know the make of the match barrel but thinking Borden. Anyways, it shot really well and put a serious hurt on smallish boulders at close to a mile.

If I was going to build one of these monsters, that would be the route I would go. Now a rebarreled whatever may work out just as well but you have to make that initial investment which adds to your overall cost.

Match barrels, accurate bullets, proper load tech...ENJOY...

If you are ambitious enough, building your own action is possible. There were several US sources with how to manuals and plans - material lists.

It is just machined steel after all. Build the receiver, and bolt. The trigger, scope base are way easier sourced from the present aftermarket.

But I would spend the money on a good quality barrel. Any MG barrel take off is not going to provide the best of accuracy.

There are 'cheaper' alternatives in the U.S. such as the Ferret50 (an .50 cal AR-upper Assembly).

As far as Canada, I'm thinking Steyr HS-50 is around $5,500 or a better alternative IMHO would be get Rick from Alberta Tactical to build you a custom one.

You are going to have to factor in a Reloading setup, components and a decent Optic as well.
Unfortunately cheap doesn't really factor into the equation when talking 50's.

Cheap and .50bmg don't go together....trust me as I own one, the rifle is the cheap part once you scope it and set up for reloading and get shooting plan on dropping 10 grand, if this is out of budget your buying an expensive wall hanger. You may get lucky on a used, but I firmly believe your money is best spent on a custom built.

Long Range Canuck beat me to it.

So far there is nothing cheap about a 50. I doubt I will ever make enough money to ever justify owning one.

Your best bet might be getting a friend to buy one and shoot his. ;)

I've tried that. Surprisingly, none of them have bought one yet. I don't know why? I already have a very large amount of brass, and I know the press minus the dies is around $850. Not worried about the small things, more just trying to find out what the Canadian market has to offer other than the HS50 and the really fancy customs. As for building my own............... I'd be afraid of it blowing my face off the first try, so no thanks. Thanks for replying.

Its to bad you couldn't rent one for say 5 rounds, obviously at the range with the owner standing over you and all that. Cause I would love to try one, just not $10000 worth (right now).

And a .460 Weatherby Mag.

And a BFG 45/70

Don't know about a T-REX or a 4-Bore yet.

It might just be me, but when you are blowing $20 bills down the barrel wouldn't it be better to do it with something your sure will put the round exactly where you tell it?
The recuring costs are pretty horrible to be doubting your equipment.
