Hey Guys,

I need help finding my next sniper rifle, Bellow are the categories that I require:

it's a rifle riddle!

1. Can reach out and knock targets down to 600+ meters.
2. Mag fed clips.
3. Pistol grip style (or can be converted Via Body kit)
4. Can look very tacticool (Tactical)
5. bigger rounds than .308's (7.62mmx51)
5. all this for under $1,000

free hugs and cookies to those that can help me! :D

Used stevens long action
ershaw barrel in your caliber choice
And this stock http://w w w.snipercentral.com/pdc.htm

Might be close to 1000 if you do your own smith work

Now send me my cookies :D

I was wondering if you or anyone knew if I could do something with my 7mm rem mag savage arms Linked bellow:

http://www.savagearms.com/111fcxp3.htm

is there a way to turn that rifle into something tactical as linked bellow, at which point I am willing to spend about $750 for a bull barbell and/or a pistol grip/5 round mag setup for the same internals.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Mag fed clips?? WTF! They're called magazines, internal/blind, trapdoor, or removable/box.

"converted via body kit" its called the stock, its not a dressed up Sunfire/Cavalier.

"can look very tacticool" NO ONE CARES unless you're a poser.

"bigger rounds than .308" You mean a magnum cartridge or something with increased ballistics. Why I'm not sure, you're shooting to 600 yards.

"under $1000"

sheesh i guess i have to learn the hard way and put up with your trolling... for now.

Just so you know, I have been doing this for well under 1 month and i'm still looking into getting into reloading.

I'm still  and probably will be for the next little while, so take it easy as I will have to remind myself :feedTroll:

Use your rifle the way it is you don't need a bull barrel to start. Shoot that one out and learn the ins and outs of shooting and practice. Buying a magnum round as a beginer was a bad idea. I am not saying that in a condeceding way as I made the same mistake with my first rifle. If the gun is new consider trading for a different caliber or selling that one and buying again.

Why are you set against the .308 it will easially knock down targets to 600yards and being you've only began shooting I can assume you don't reload and to shoot enough to be good at 600 yards you will soon see why the .308 is so popular compared to the magunums when it comes to practicing. Plus you also have factory match ammo that is availiable in .308 where most other calibers are offered in hunting ammo only.

If I were you I would try to find someone that can get you that stock in canada. the smaller barrel will look silly but you can practice while you save money for a new barrel.

The most important part you might be forgetting as I did starting out was optics. Don't cheap out here you will regret it trust me as I have spent double what I should have upgrading when I could of just waited a couple pay cheques to buy once.

If you have any question's pm me as I will likely forget this thread and also my spelling is horrible but I hope I helped a bit. :D

IF you can sell that rifle I would recomend this
Stevens short action ($350 used)
PDC stock ($675 US$)
Savage police take off heavy barrel in .308 ($110)
Weaver bases ($10)
Burris signagure zee rings ($50)
Good scope lightly used in the EE (bushnell Elite, Burris, Leupold VX-II) ($300-400)
Gunsmith work (barrel install and triger tuning)($200)

Total -1870

You take your 1000 budget and you add 450 for selling your 7mm or what ever you sell it for (not sure what they are worth) and you only need another 400 saved to have a semi custom that is what you want.

You may not have the budget right now but you will have a way better rifle when done

Well said Jayph. We regulars need to encourage not discourage newbies to the sport. I know it can be frustrating to take the time to explain things that we take for granted to someone new. Remember we were all new at one time. I figure the day I quit learning is the day I should give up the sport.

Akelies, you have a good idea but do need a bigger budget. Do lots of reading, the internet can be your best friend. Start small and build in stages. You will get there, just be patient. In the end you will have something great. The EE can be a great tool also. Biggest thing though.... HAVE FUN DOING IT!!!! A bad day at the range is better than a good day at work.

Welcome to a wonderful sport.

Just scoping a bolt action doesn't make it a sniper's rifle. However, if you can find one, look into a Remington M24. Comes in .308 or .300 Win Mag. Be advised that it weighs 14.25 pounds loaded. Won't be cheap either(around $3700US, Stateside). If you can find one.

I think a Remington 700SPS tactical should cost under $900. You could paint it with some Krylon for $15 to give it a camo/tactical look. You could get a cheap-o tacticool Barista scope for about $90, a bolt knob, a butt stock ammo pouch and a sling. I think you'd be there and you'd have a pretty good rifle too.

Sometimes we forget that we were all there once. or atleast I wasn't born will a great deal of knowledge I learned by asking questions and still far from knowing everything. I try to answer anybody's question no matter how "stupid" (in real life mostly not too much on the board here) I am always alone at the range where I go, once there was someone else and he fired 10 rounds to zero and left. I don't like what thats implying. Not a single person I graduated with (2001) or friends I have now shoot rifles. That scares me a bit. Although when doing load development it's nice not having booms all around you so not all bad :D

Please, stop calling precision rifles a SNIPER RIFLE.

It is not a sniper rifle unless a trained, experienced sniper is shooting it.
If you want a tactical rifle buy the cheapest heavy barreled Remington 700 or Savage 110 in whatever caliber you want and pick a cool stock from Bell and Carlson or HS Precision or whatever you fancy. 308 is recommended for 600 yards. Plus the lower recoil makes it more enjoyable to shoot.

BTW
This is one of the few times that TDC was not out of line and I think your original post sounded closer to trolling than he did.

So if I sit in the cockpit of the space shuttle does that make it not a space shuttle because I am untrained?

I second the Howa Axiom for what young fellow wants to do right now.

What's important is to get new people into the shooting sports and we can't accomplish that if we deride their chosen firearm. One person may not like someone elses chosen firearm for esthetic or personal reasons (I don't own an SKS or a hunting rifle with a left-hand action), but that doesn't make their choice any less valid than another's.

How about a used Remington 700 Sendero dropped into one of the stocks designed by Plaster? Then add on a quick-clip system. Would that come close?

If you are just getting into the sport and 600 yard is your max range a .308 is fine, even a .223 would work well. As far as the stock you are looking for the Howa is an option or the new Savage if it becomes available up here anytime soon.

Really any basic entry precision rifle will serve you well as you learn and you can always upgrade and add things to the rifle as you progress. I still shoot my plain jane Rem LTR in .308 alot even though I have a couple of "fancier" rifles to shoot.
