Yet a second one, going back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just brought home a new 308 Milspec, I owned one about a year ago could not get along with it, this one I thought new trigger, maybe I wil try!!!!

Cleaned it up, and tore it down for a good look, complete crap, there is a 2-3 mm secion of rifling with teh centre missing 1 inch from the barrel, as well major chatter marks 1 inch from the end! I am sorry but remington is making garbage these days, should go over and Sit with GM!!!!!!!!!!

Take it back on Thursday pretty pissed about this one, as its the same dam thing as the last. And to boot 3 years ago I bought a Rem SPS 243 that started excessive bolt wear!I am done with this once respectible gun maker....

I once bought a used 700 pull off barrel at a gun show... On inspection it looked terrible - probably the reason it got pulled. I sent the barrel back to Remington for inspection. They contacted me and said they would replace the barrel but required an action. I told them where and how I bought it. They said that did not matter - the barrel was faulty and if I sent them any 700 action, they would replace it with a new barreled action in any caliber at no charge. I sent a beat up old stripped bare action and received a complete new BDL barreled action.

I still like Remington.

Does it shoot?

Going to try it today, its only one out of the 5 riflings, it has a big pit out of the centre right at the end noticable by eye and a bore light.

I supose there is a chance it will copper over and still shoot..

Buit still you do not see this on Tikka, of Sakos, or any custom barrels.

If people used borescopes before they bought factory rifles, they would never buy them. There is an excellent video that demonstrates the typical Remington barrel compared to a custom lapped barrel.

It doesn't mean they won't shoot, but it does show that "breaking them in" is basically futile. Chatting with the guys on Team Savage, they said that Savage barrels are pretty scary to look at too.

There is no difference between the barrels used on the Cheapest SPS and the most expensive CDL's or 5r's; they're all crudely machined. That's why I think it is a waste of money to buy expensive Remingtons. For barrels that are supposedly hammer-forged, they sure are shyte compared to Sako/Tikka

Bought a brand new 597 HB in 22 Long Rifle a couple of years ago. The first inch or so of rifling was badly eroded almost like throat wear on a heavly shot milsurp. The rifle wouldn't shoot worth a damn. Sent it back and Remington replaced it with a brand new rifle. This one is fine. They didn't replace just the barrel, but the whole rifle complete. I was satisfied. But I must concur, there are some real duds comming from Remington lately.

Hard to believe again I just cleaned it up, and you can clearly see with your eye, no borescope one of teh rifling damaged .5 to .75 from the muzzle end its partly missing even..........

Glad to hear it shoots well for you. Maybe they are starting to make the rifles in Mexico.

The 22-250 Remington VSF Desert TanI just picked up copper fouls like a SOB, but it does shoot good?

Just got to scrub a bit more than usual. I imagine the bore is rough as heck.

Maybe my shooting technique sucks, but all my factory M700 barrels shoot really well. I do admit that my bench technique truly bites!

Touch wood, I've been so lucky with M700 factory barrels. Even bought quite a few take off barrels on the EE Forum here. ;)

Sorry to hear about your plight!

Peace out!

Not justifying the results of mass production manufacture but as Chuck observed most factory barrels shoot reasonably well. I do have a bore scope and if the Savage lovers got to look down their barrels they wouldn't be all that impressed with the surface of their bores either. High spots in a barrel will cause much grief but low spots don't really effect accuracy a lot unless they are right at the crown and then it would be a big issue. Like driving down a wash-board gravel road. Once the vehicle gets up to speed the tires tend to float right over the holes. Yes you will get some additional fouling that does not occur in match grade barrels as are supplied by any of the aftermarket makers of barrels but at the price you paid for a complete rifle you are not going too far wrong.

had a rem barrelled 25-06 chatter marks would scare you!! fouled like nothing I'd ever owned shot great if you kept it clean?? go figure? I made 117 Hornady's go 3300 FPS over the crony smacked at least a half dozen coyotes with it before I got tired of trying to get the copper out with sweets and flogged it off.

Yes this one fouled quick at teh muzzle as well, and I had to pour the sweets to it tonight...

But the dam thing shot well under MOA for 5 shots at 100. for my 10th to 40th

I put 40 rounds down range with not accuracy loss and moderate fouling

It shot better fouled than not

I leaned a long time ago when it comes to remington factory barrels don't look down the barrel look at the target it shoots. you would cringe at most of my barrels especially comparing them to the krieger I had here but they all shoot better than I expected from a factory rifle. 1 MOA and under and ocasionally 1/2 MOA if I do my part but the consistancy of a match barrel is why I am slowly changing out barrels and ease of cleaning.
