Hello Ben, or some of you other cast bullet loaders, I haven't loaded 30 cast for a long time and you guys can save me some time esperimenting.
I found some of my old cast 30 calibre bullets and decided to load them for my pre 64 Winchester 30-30. I found twenty some that are lubed and gas checked, all set to load, plus a bunch of unlubed.
They are from my 311291 mold and weigh about 170 grains. I would like to try them at near factory velocities for jacketed bullets. I have H335, 4320, 4198, 4895, in two varieties, and Norma 203 that may do it.
I also have the faster powders, Unique, 2400, H110, 2447, etc, for lighter loads.
What shluld I try?
 
Hi Bruce. My model 94 with a 20" barrel worked fairly well with 10.2 grains of Unique according to my log. That was shooting a 170 grain gas checked flat nose from a Lee mould. I was using a Williams receiver mounted peep sight and a semi-homebrewed fiber optic front site so I didn't bother to group it on paper. Hell, the back sight is little more than fuzz anymore. :D I was hitting a 6 inch gong at 100 yards 99 percent of the time though, so I must have been doing something right.

I remember trying 3031 in it as well as a 4### powder which I can't remember right now, but I didn't write down anything in the log. That was about the time I bought an 8 lb keg of Unique and started using it in everything.

Maybe some of the other guys will have something for you.

Bruce: My load with 311041(175gr gc) was 17 grs. of 4759, with the bullet sized to .310", but it never got to the accuracy level of the same bullet in my boltguns. My Browning 1885 Traditional Hunter in 30/30 wouldn't shoot anything good, so it's gone......Ben
 
H4831: H4895/28 grains gave fine accuracy for me with a slightly heavier bullet at 187 grains. Velocity was about 1975. I think the load could be increased a bit but haven't done that yet. Rx 7 was also quite good but haven't located my load data card to give you specifics. May be in my range box so will check that tomorrow.
 
Thanks guys. Denny I have a Lyman peep on mine. I want to go a little heavier than I can with Unique. It's a funny thing with those aperaures. They seem to fuzz up as they age! I can remember when they were always sharp as tack. Must be the darn metal they use in them.
Levi, I just don't have 3031 in the stable. I know I should have, but I have a lot of varieties and just make others do.
That 4895 load sounds good. That powder is certainly versatile and works well at lower pressures.
I also notice in the old Lyman Handbook of Cast Bullets, they have 4227 driving a 170 grain gas check (311291) at 2355 in the 30-30. Wow! I will try 4227, but about 4 grains less than that load, to start, anyway.
It will be a while before I get to shoot any, but I will let you know what works out.
 
I have always had great luck with IMR3031 for fast loads and Unique for plinking loads. I have the HP version of a Lyman 311041 that I size to .311 and it shoots just as good as jacketed bullets from my 30/30's, about 1.5-2.0" at 100 yards.
 
H4831: The Rx 7 load was 26 grains. Required a moderately hard bullet (BHN 19) for best accuracy. Velocity above 2000 (actually almost 2100 from a 26" barrel). Would think a carbine would fall within those numbers.
 
It's been a while since I hunted with the '94 and cast bullets. I used 4895 with good results. I was using a Lee mould, and the bullets ran 175 to 180 grain if memory serves.
I don't have the load handy, but I think it was running about 1900 fps.

They're using the same fuzzy metal on this end of the country Bruce. I took my new (new to me) Browning 92 lever in 44 mag to the range last night. Fired about 50 really horrible shots trying to use the open sights. I gave up, turned the gun sideways and just used the side of the barrel. Sadly, that was 100 % better !!!! A fellow CGNer and I are working on a deal for a Lyman #2 peep for it :D At least I can see the front sight and center it in a fuzzy ring. LOL!!!
