Give it a try.
The 308 Win and 284 Win are almost the same case length. The bolt will not even begin to close on a 308 in a 284 chamber.

I'm just looking at the drawings... The .284 case is .155" longer, and the OD of the neck is .320. So depending on the length of the .308 bullet (a 110gr or 150gr spitzer maybe), as well as the tolerances of the .284 throat, it might fit...
On the same topic (sort of), Remington moved the shoulder of the .280Rem .050" ahead to prevent it from being chambered in a .270Win rifle. Bigger bullet, yet they new it could be chambered...
