.284/08

Give it a try.

The 308 Win and 284 Win are almost the same case length. The bolt will not even begin to close on a 308 in a 284 chamber. :)

I'm just looking at the drawings... The .284 case is .155" longer, and the OD of the neck is .320. So depending on the length of the .308 bullet (a 110gr or 150gr spitzer maybe), as well as the tolerances of the .284 throat, it might fit...

On the same topic (sort of), Remington moved the shoulder of the .280Rem .050" ahead to prevent it from being chambered in a .270Win rifle. Bigger bullet, yet they new it could be chambered...

Nope. Neck OD of .308 winchester cartridge is .343 inches. Too big to fully chamber in a .284, i'm afraid. Bolt wouldn't close.

Yeah, probably not. I'd check it out tomorrow, but I'm busy swapping my .338WM barrel onto my .308 so I'll have a .338 Federal...:D

I realized the error in my thought (brain fart) just about the time I was "hitting send".

Short of editing the post by totally eliminating it, I wasn't sure what to do so I just let it stay to see how it would be answered.

Some interesting comments and some not so much.

Some time back I had asked a question about how I could have a Win. 100 rechambered and barreled to another cartrigde (7mm-08 I believe). I was told that because the 100 barrel has the gas port that it would not be doable.
I guess that got me going.

I'm glad no one thought it was a great idea.

Oddly enough, that can be made to work. You need a 7mm barrel, true, thread, ream the chamber, and drill the gas port. Contour the barrel, assemble as required, and you should be good to go.:D - dan
