well my m14 apart from plinking out to 400m , will be used for hunting deer and goats ( 200m and under in most cases )

so pick what sighting method YOU would use for my application, and tell me why ( please :D )

as i have only ever really done alot of m14 shooting with open sights, im wanting to collect pros and cons from people with the experience

Thanks in advance

I used an EOTech off hand @ 400 yards and enjoyed excellent results.
The 1 MAO center dot can be very accurate :)

I have several M1A type rifles....about half of them are equipped with aimpoint M3 2MOAs and the others are rigged up with Leupold FX 2.75x28 scout scopes. The scout scopes are excellent as that little bit of magnification helps me alot when shooting past 200 yards. Now that Leupold has their CDS available (low profile externally adjustable elevation and windage turrets....with a zero stop on elevation none the less!) I am giving serious consideration to changing over the remaining aimpoints. What appeals to me about the system is the ability to dial elevation so I can have a 100 yard zero.

I just took the plunge into expensive scopes and put a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x56 on my M14. That will be fine for 400 meter shooting like you describe. I can't really imagine someone seriously hunting goats at 400 meters with open sights or aimpoints. I mean, forget for a second that it's a battle rifle and just look at your game and the range. I don't know anyone who goes goat/sheep hunting with iron sights/aimpoints with their long range bolt rifles, that's for sure...

i know.. which is why i said under 200m for the hunting side of things

i wouldnt be comfortable taking a shot on a goat at 400m with an aimpoint, unless i knew the rifle, and myself were capable of putting the shot on target

i know the m14 can do it.. but whether MY m14 can do it :p .. different story

Scope... I like to see my targets better. Even though my glasses correct it, my astigmatism gives me grief. one of the reason;s why I can;t shoot pool very well either.

A low magnification scope, gets you slightly closer to your target and gives you a faster target acquisition (IMO) but isnt too powerful so you wont see a patch of fur or the bushes and branches. also allows easier long shots and doesnt bother when closer.

Scope for hunting. Red dots of red dot sights typically cover about 4" at 100. Too much. Mind you, if you're thinking about taking a 400 meter shot at a deer or goat, you'd best be able to hit a 9" pie plate, every time, with your hunting ammo, at that distance. You need to know exactly where the bullet will end up at that distance and be an expert wind reader too.
