Just wondering what you guys think about using milsurp ammo in a new 700.... namely, my 700.

I have an 160rnd battle pack in a green vynal bag... I'm thinking it's US but who knows? Are there any downsides to using this stuff? My only real concern is corrosion.

Is this south african? The head stamp is B81 7,62 R1M1

It's fine. It'll probably group like sh!t, but some on here claim sub-moa with surplus ammo so who knows...

160rd Green vinyl battle pack, I'm guessing South African.

My prediction, 2-3 inch groups. Use gold medal match or handloads and you can get that down to 1/2 that size, or 1/3.

Thanks! As long as it's not corrosive I'll give it a whirl. have a bunch of factory ammo and handloads going out with me this afternoon.

Cheers

I'm not sure if it's corrosive or not (South African isn't), just give your chamber a quick clean after if you're worried.

That's about spot on - I tried military-style non-match ball ammo (PMC) and that's about what I got (3-5 inches @ 200 yds). Granted, not with a Remmy, but that should give you an idea.

Just stick to match ammo, when possible. American Eagle in .308 Win. is actually pretty decent for "budget" ammo (less than 20$/box), but it's hard to find.

I was getting about 1 MOA with Portuguese Surplus in a Tikka Tactical. It was as good a Federal GM in that gun. Hand-loads were much better, but not bad for what used to be very cheap ammo ($350/1000 taxes in....those were the days!!)

You can always go for "Mexican Match" ammo. If the standard milsurp round doesnt shoot very well, pull the bullrts from them and seat better quality bullets. Then you can sell the pulled bullets to the M-14 blasters...

I posted my 'lab rat results' of my mix/match of 762-51 surplus awhile back, in my 700P the SA is good for 2.5 + but the portugese is good for .7all day long.........

I would have to say port or isreal first then nork & PMC second and then any surplus ammo after that.
Although I would have to say my 700 I try to use custom reload's as it make shooting a bolt way more fun.

I watched a young lady shoot a Remington 700 with milsurp at a ORA newbie class. She kept most of her shots inside the X ring (1 minute). I think it was Santa Barabra ammo.

Most milsurp is 2 minute ammo, at best. Some lots in some rifles will do much better.
