Best scope?

Watching you sleep! Shhhh....
So, I have a .308 that I want to rescope from it's fixed 4X to something variable and more modern. I'm wanting to get out to the 700+ yard ranges, but still be good under 100. I'll worry about the ammo later, just wondering what some of you would go with. For sake of argument, lets start off saying money is not an issue... then maybe we'll cut it down to under $1000.00

Bushnell Elite 4200 6x24 tactical, 6500 2.5X16. Very good glass. Solid mechanicals.

Sightron SIII LR 6x24 w/mildot reticle. Some of best glass in a scope today.

For less money, the Nikon monarchs. But the glass is not quite as sharp. Still very useable.

Nice choices Cummins! The 6.5 is kinda what I had in mind.

Initially there will be a lot of target shooting, but the end result will be a longer range hunting rifle. Predominently for big game, but varments beware. Why Stubble? wat do you ee as a difference?
 
For target use,I would go Nightforce NXS 3.5x15x50,but they are quite heavy for use on a hunting rifle.I would avoid the vxIII 6.5x20x40 because the eye relief changes drastically from 6.5x to 20x.I sold mine because I had to move my head back and forth when the magnification was adjusted.

I don't necessarily mind a little extra weight. But that is interesting about the eye relief, I hadn't noticed that it the store, but I wasn't paying attention to that either. How much repositioning are we talking? 1/4" or 2"?
 
NXS 3.5-15x50 is what my LE2B wears (around $1500 or thereabouts)
Mark 4 3.5-10x40 is on my ATRS 300 Win (Around $1300 I think )

The Elite 4200 had limited elevation adjustment however I believe that they may have rectified that problem. Not sure if it competes with 110 MOA on the NXS though.
 
Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5-30 with the new style turrets or if you don't mind spending the cash I would put a nightforce on it 3.5-15 or 5.5-22
 
The eye relief on my VXL 6.5x20x56 changes about 1.5" from min to max magnification. For your application I would go with a 4.5x14, more flexibility for hunting. I find that even at 6.5 the field of view is to restricted for closer shots. I do really like the side parralax feature and wouldn't buy a higher power scope with out it.
 
The Zeiss Conquest scopes maintain a constant eye relief of 3.5". Also the glass on them gives my Nightforce scopes (NXS models) a run for the money. It's pretty good. The only flaw is the 1" tube and the MOA adjustment range (which isn't that big of a deal unless you plan on going out to 1000 yards or more).

I was in Target Sports Centre (site sponsor) a while back and they had a schmidt and bender used but in nice shape in on consignment. 3-12x50 ( I think) the price was right and it would be perferct. $1500, if they still have it.

Well let's see if he/she shops around older stock on the Leupold and Zeiss Conquest scopes can be found. Conquest scopes for the older stock can be found at $1000 or slightly under. Which was in his budget.

Sightron SIII scopes are just slightly over the $1000 range. So it's in there as well. The only scopes that don't fit the budget are the NF, and other top end scopes.

One thing the 4200 has going for it is the rain repellent coating. Even the best glass comes in second when covered in rain. ;)

Of course, if you never hunt when it might rain, then this isn't an advantage. I think a couple other manufacturers also incorporate this type of coating.
