Finally shot my 416 Rigby

A while back I traded a fellow gunnut my Mod 70 458 Lott for his Brno ZKK 602 in 416 Rigby. All my other big bores are Brno's, so I wanted to keep it consistent.

I really wanted to shoot it right away, but factory ammo is ridiculous, and I planned on reloading anyway. Everything came together this weekend, the shell holder came in (Last thing I was waiting for), so I loaded up a few test rounds and headed out to the range. I have to say, I was very surprised. After shooting the 458 Lott, which was a lot more punishing, the 416 Rigby was pleasant to shoot (I'm only 140lbs, the Brno soaked up the recoil nicely). Anyway, long story short I just wanted to share the experience:

i have a 375 h&h and a 416rigby and i must say the rigby is a dream to shoot compared to the 375 mine are ruger # 1s i just love the big bores DUTCH

Yes and No, I was shooting at the Gong at the end, and was successful, no paper target yet, just wanted to get a feel for the rifle and loads before I shoot it from the bench, which is always a bit more brutal.
 
What loads were you shooting...bullet weight and approximate velocity?

While we can't exactly compare recoil energy, I find muzzle energy while keeping gun weight in mind is a reasonable way to compare. That rifle probably goes a little over 9 lbs...right?
 
Hornady's starting load:

81gr IMR4350
Federal 215 Primer
~2100ft/s
400gr Hornady RN Interlock, cheapest plinking bullet I could find :p

Just brought out the digital fish scale:

Rifle is 8lbs 10 Ounces empty, 8lbs 15 Ounces with 3 in.
 
Nice gun. I shot a buddy's Ruger M77 in .416 Rigby several years ago. I found the recoil wasn't nearly as bad as I expected - more of a big push. But I opted not shoot it with the scope.:rolleyes:

Try to find some 350 Speers. They're my go to practice/deer bullet. Wholesale should have them around $45 a box. I thought they came in 100 ct boxes but the website says 50 and I'm too lazy to go back downstairs to look at mine!
 
Now load up some 350 gr Speers or X's ahead of 102 grs of 4350 and she'll shoot hard and flat. I dropped down to 100 grs in mine so I could get 70 rounds per pound. I don't recall my Ruger having as much muzzle climb as your Brno, but it is a pleasure to watch.
