Hey all,

I'm new to these forums and though I've been shooting my whole life I've never used airguns before. I am interested in buying a rifle and a pistol for practice in my yard for when I can't get to the range. Where is the best place in Richmond Hill (or close to it) to buy some airguns?

Your best bet is online stores like D&L or Air Gun Source. I live 10 min from Richmond Hill and the only stores I know of are Al Flaherty's (limited selection) in Toronto, Hero Army Surplus in Oshawa, Lebarons (rubbish service) in Markham and then Canadian Tire at the bottom of the list.

Since I know that you came to Canada a while ago, I would suggest that you be careful about shooting in your back yard. Yes, even air guns.

This country is not as open minded as your previous home.

True. It is againt the bylaws in almost all suburban areas, and that includes Thornhill/ Richmond Hill.

I live in Thornhill, so I went through the same thing.

In the end, I got mine off the web, but there is usually a limited selection of them at places like bass pro and your local hunting shop.

Ya like kevin said, the by laws for this area does not allow the discharge of any firearms including air guns, I do it but cautiosly and with my neighbours ok so i know the cops aren't going to arrive at my door. But as others have said online is your best bet, lebarons (dicks) no longer sell bb pistols because they look like real guns, this seriously shaved down the list of where to get them, bass pro does not have a good selection and neither does can tire, so i would go with airgunsource.com good selection at reasonable prices.

Thanks for the heads-up, I appreciate it. But, actually, I was born and grew-up in Canada. :)

So I cant "plink"/practice at home? So where in the world am I supposed to fire the airguns?

Since the CBC show on look-a-like guns, Le Baron has made the decision to no longer carry air pistols that resemble real guns, or related accessories.

For the time being, they continue to carry a small selection of air rifles.

I use my garage, since my neigbors live on all sides of me.

Other then that, I just use it at my cottage now.

Thats why I got real guns lol. Almost as easy to use them with all the bylaws and regulations.

I highly recommend D & L airguns, they are the most helpful and friendly people you will meet, plus theit prices are pretty good. If they dont have something one their website just email them and they can pretty much get anything in a pretty short time for use

Before reading the replies, I would have recommended you try LeBaron at Highway 7 and Woodbine. Even after reading the replies, I would still recommend you try it. Ask for Ben in the gunshop - he's a good guy. Agree - some of the guys in the gunshop are not so nice to deal with, but Ben is one of the better ones there and I specifically deal with him, even if I have to wait for him to finish with another customer. Also, Ed who works in the camping department knows probably more about airguns than anyone in the store - it's a shame he doesn't work in the gunshop. I have bought many airguns, rifles and shotguns there...never had an issue. It is true that they have pulled a lot of their replica air pistols off the shelf, but you can still get a 2240 there (I believe) or, as others have mentioned, basic air rifles (the non-PAL selection is not as great as the PAL selection). It's closeby, so there's not much to lose.

There's also the Bass Pro Shops at Vaughan Mills, but I find LeBaron to be much better in terms of ammo selection and pricing for their guns.

X2 on LeBaron...and Ed does know his stuff. I have great respect for Bing and most of the staff in the gun shop at LeBaron on Woodbine and have always had very good advice ... support fwiw. Actually all their staff have been a pleasure to deal with ... which is probably why I spend so much money there!!

Not trying to justify bad experience that others may have had but it probably must get pretty frustrating to stand behind a counter and deal with some of the "aXXholes" I have witnessed looking at guns. Course that is no excuse to assume that every guy (or gal) that stops in to fondle a gun or two before they drop considerable cash on the inevitable purchase...belongs in that category ... and poor, insolent counter service can sure drive a decent customer into becoming a raving prick!!

As with most stores, there are probably good times and bad times to visit. I have a bank branch that I go to that is great Mondays to Fridays during 9-5 hours, but on the weekends, they are short-staffed and have long lineups. No store is perfect, and I understand people who put a lot of stock in first impressions, but I can tell you that the LeBaron at Highway 7 and Woodbine have never steered me wrong. It is literally the only place in the GTA that I enjoy shopping at - was there again tonight getting a case of skeet shells and RWS pellets. I find the staff there to be helpful and friendly. Bing in the gunshop knows a lot about guns, but I know that he's not big on airguns, so I just deal with Ben (I don't think airguns are his thing, but he is more than happy to show you what they have in stock). I honestly don't think there are too many places that can beat LeBaron's prices.

You will have to either join a shooting club, where most clubs won't allow plinking targets such as pop cans, etc. or drive to a cottage or wilderness property where the local bylaws allow firearms discharge. All Toronto and area police forces will treat any gun call as a "high risk takedown", so it's really not worth the risk of plinking in your backyard. As one poster mentioned, it's almost the same as shooting a powder burning gun.

Whereabouts in Richmond Hill are you? Do you drive?

You can sneak around some fields in Oak Ridges or towards Stouffville.
Just drive around and find a quiet spot on a dirt road far from houses and where you know there's nobody walking a dog, hiking, mountain biking, etc. Then be discreet and don't carry your gun in the open where you can be spotted from a mile away!!!
Sit still and conceal yourself from view, set targets at a safe direction and plink away.

Careful with the bylaws...when I make comments about "trusting the neighbours", I'm doing so jokingly - be safe, rather than sorry. :dancingbanana:

On a related note, I really miss the Stouffville range...:(
