Upgrading my Rem 700P- Some Questions

Over the next few months, as finances dictate, I want to upgrade my Rem 700P. I want to get it switched from the current internal mag/floor plate configuration to a detachable mag and I want to add (if possible) rail to the bottom in place of the current fixed 2 sling swivel studs. I would prefer to do these both without changing stocks as I really like the HS stock that comes standard with the gun.
So, is there a place in Canada that offers a reliable conversion for the detachable mags? Are there additional mags available as well?
Also, is it possible to add the HS Precision acessory rail after the fact to their stocks? The rail I'm speaking about is this one to allow freedom in bipod, sling swivel, and handstop positioning:

I see it's available as an option at time of purchase:

but can it be installed outside of the factory?
Lastly, I would like to add an over-sized bolt knob. Any things to look for or avoid in this department?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Freeland or Anschutz rail - either is an excellant choice.

Badger M5 or VBull mag systems are your choices - VBull is Canadian to boot! - both use AICS magazines.

Badger or a whole host of other companies bolt handles can easily be added to your bolt.

All this stuff is easily done to your stock.

Cheers, Carl

I believe that HS make a detachable mag system, failing that V-Bull. These things are "top shelf". McMillan may have the rail that you are looking for or Brownells.

Thanks for the quick responses guys, but that opens up a few new questions if you don't mind?

... or Brownells.

What is the difference? Are they both equally durable, and how much of a difference is there in what accessories can be mounted to them? If it helps, I'd like to mount my current Harris bipod and some form of a handstop/sling swivel stud to it. I did see that Brownell's has the Anschutz rail available.
Also, how good of a gunsmith do you need to be to inlet the current HS Precision stock to mount the rail?

I've heard that the HS conversion is difficult to get in Canada, and that the mags are rare? Are the AICS mags fairly easy to source?

Anything to keep an eye out for or is it all personal comfort?

Thanks again for all your help guys. You're building my next stack of purchases:)

The PSS stock is easy to inlet for a rail - just need to mill it out to fit the width of rail you choose. Freeland is a little more narrower than the anschutz, but the anshutz has engraved markings for repeatable handstop placement. You can place any number of accessories onto either. Harris makes an adapter to slide into the rail and attach a bipod to(has a swivel stud on it).

I've used badger bolt knobs on most of my rifles, comfort is there and appreciated, as I have big paws! Tacops produces a similar one that attaches better in my opinion and is more asthetically pleasing.

You will be the final say in what you want for a bolt knob - find somebody who has them installed and see how they feel in your hand. I know they are very nice additions to any rifle.

I wouldn't waste your time with the HS bottom metal - finicky at best.

You will never ever regret getting either the Badger M5 or VBull. I speak from experience - I own both! Mags are easy to obtain and interchange between both bottom metals. If you order the VBull, you actually get 1x10rd mag with it. Badger gives 1x5rd mag with theirs. Mind you, you will need to have your stock inletted for either system, and the badger needs to have pillar bedding done as well - they are provided in the kit when you order it.

Contact Wallbanger - aka JW Precision - aka John Wall. He's a fellow CGN and he can get the Badger system for you.

If you have any other questions, just drop me a line.

All the best, Carl

I just wanted to thank you guys again for the help here, and via PM. My little project is taking on a life of its own and it should be a lot of fun in the process.
My current plan is to replace the stock with another HS Precision (the PST007) so it retains the features I love on the current one, but adds in the adjustable LOP and cheekrest, plus it's going to feature the lower rail. I've spoken to Korth and P&D and I'll be ordering in a mildot Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm LR/T Target upgraded with M1 turrets to replace the Niko Sterling mildot 10X I currently have. A few other upgrades are being priced out and to round things off my Leupold Mark 4 12-40x60mm Tactical mildot spotting scope should be here by the middle of next week.
Thanks again everyone for all the help!

Contact Casey at Tacord, he did my bolt knob and tapped my receiver and base for 8-40 screws. Did a couple other things, and aside from his work being excellent he is an absolute pleasure to deal with.

Great thread, anyone have any pictures of the HS or VBULL mag kits.

Ive also started a 700P build and have priced out the bits and pieces as well.

A V Bull conversion is very nice. Ed has spent a lot of time creating one kick as product.

Casey also did some one off custom work on this bolt...great work and great guy.

Here is project Savage, just completed and on her way home from ATR.
I feel like a proud father, LOL
Needless to say I'm pretty excited, Rick and the troops at ATR gave me what I wanted. :)

The HS system AND 10 round mag are as easy as pie to get in Canada. Just order it from a dealer. Just got two for my Remington 700 VTR's (in 308).

The system comes with one small mag, but I wanted the 10 rounders. It costs about $500.00 for the system and about $200.00 for the 10 round magazine.
