Saw a cougar today...

we were out on the quads today and just west of brantford we saw an adult cougar jump across the trail. i was 3rd guy back so i only saw back legs and the tail and immediately thought lion when i saw the long tail.

the 2 guys in front of me confirmed that i wasnt seeing things.

the scary part is this thing was about 12ft from the edge of a survey and peoples backyards...

never thought id see one around here but there have been a few sightings lately. i hunt about 10 minutes from there so im hoping to get a better look at it sometime.

think we will ever have a season on these things?

MNR Trolling for Cougars

After several reported sighting in and around Haliburton county and lots of local speculation The Ministry of Natural Resources is going to put 40 cameras on trails around the province to catch a glimpse of the elusive cougar. The cameras will be set up in areas where ``promising'' sightings, tracks or D-N-A are reported. There are plenty of sites, as there have been more than 500 ``cougar'' sightings since 2002. But the vast majority have turned out to be coyotes, bobcats -- and even deer.

There was a guy stalked in his farmyard during the day not too far from where I live back in March. A neighbor pulled into his yard while it was going on and luckily put a stop to it. I think it would be a case of S,S and S if I saw one.
 
If I had to be in the woods , I would take my ton of 440c :D

There's been a lot of sightings over the past few years. I remember when the first sightings were being reported, there was some pooh-poohing going on by the MNR and local police. The cougars are real!

The best type of cougar sighting, IMHO however, always involves the cougar sporting some form of spiked heels and leather. Purring is also very good.:adult:
 
You won't be seeing a season on them anytime soon, they are on the endangered species list. That doesn't mean you can't shoot it though, just be sure to say it growled at you first. Problem is that if the thing did decide to eat you there isn't a darn thing you could do about it.
I have seen it west of Brantford too.
The MNR is certainly not denying it's existence.
 
Male cougars will be travelling looking for a mate. Suppostly they can travel up to 1000km. Who knows where it will be when hunting season comes along. SHoot on site, pull the ol' JESUS CHRIST NED!, ITS COMIN RIGHT FOR US!!!
 
Cougars up to 45 mph over short distances, The ones chasing you after a night at the bar... at least 140 kms in long distances down deerfoot trail.
 
So that begs a question. What would you use to hunt one? 12g, .308, or something heavier?

Where are you located canadianhunter312? I've heard grumblings that some sheep have been taken in southern Manitoba by cougars and my dad has possibly seen one skulking in a field. One of our family's friends has a heard of Scandinavian sheep and apparently there have been more than a couple sightings on his farm.

Depends, if your gonna wait for an attack, a coach gun with buck shot.
Any center fire if hunting. Their not tough, just fast , and deadly.
 
we've killed more cougar with a 44 mag winchester trapper than you can shake a stick at- they typically go for either the first or last pack horse in the string- either a low-ground ambush or fall from an overhanging limb, if the tree is suitable- that's why it's important to have a "rear gunner" if you will and to stagger your strings
 
The man who instructed my CFSC course ( well known local shooter) took a cougar with a .22wmr pistol in the states. It was apparently treed then shot. The fur was very nice.
