hi all. i'm looking for a good starting point for a 30 30 load for a win 94. i have both imr 4350 and imr 4895 and both have about the same velocity in the book however the 4895 uses about 5 grains less to achieve those speeds. should i go with the 4895 just because it uses less or load up 5 of each and see what works (i'm useing iron sights so its not like i need it to clover leaf at 200 yards). also am i stuck with round nose bullets? can i use bullets with the plastic tips (like the v-max) safely? round nose 308 bullets is getting hard to find. thanks for the help.

4350 is a bit too slow for the 30-30. You may get by with 170 grain bullets, but not very efficient with 150 grain bullets. There are many medum burners that are very good in the 30-30. Powders such as 3031, 4320, 4064, etc., come to mind. Of the two powders you have, I would go with 4895. It may be about ideal with 150 grain bullets and certainly OK, with the 170s.

3030

Can't help you with the powders you've got, I CAN tell you that my wife's bolt 3030 shoots cloverleafs with IMR4198 and 150gr RN(scoped), and her marlin shoots very consistant 110yd bullseye's with IMR 4064 and 170grFP's and RN. It also did well with W748, but only at the hot end of the scale. We couldn't find a good load for either with 3031, but that's probably due to us finding a good load with the other powders first.
We too have had trouble finding 150gr Hornady's. We were able to find some 150gr Sierra's. If you're stuck, or want a skookum htg bullet there's also places like Hawk and Woodleigh, and if you want, there's lot's of cast bullet manufacturers.

IMR 3031 or WIN 748 used both . Used Remington Brass and Winchester Brass. Federal Large rifle and Winchester large rifle primers. 170 cast plus 170 Hornady.
Fired from Marlin and a Winchester 94AE. No complaints re load . Did not chrony load will next time out. My guess its around 1950 to 2000 fps. Not hot. Accurate at 100 . Have not fired at 200 yard with loads.
Scopes used Leupold 1 x 4 and Bushnell 1 x 5 power.

Win 748 34.5gr-150 gr bullet or 32 gr of the same with 170gr bullet................many deer and several moose later................Harold

Please read a reloading manual. Does your 30-30 have a tube mag? If it does, then NO (no pointed bullets) - you have to use RN or FP bullets. There are some specific bullets for the 30-30 that perform at 30-30 velocities.

Really, read through a reloading manual - especially the section on 30-30-loads.

Good luck and be safe!

for me:

remington brass, WLR primer, 32 grains 3031, hornady 170 grain bullet

is virtually identical in velocity to remington factory ammo. this load is faster in winchester brass, and faster still in federal.

i don't bother crimping since i alway put 5 in the mag and chamber 1, which means there are 4 rounds in the magazine. i am convinced that with the 30WCF it is the spring pressure from having a full mag that makes crimping necessary.
