Remington SPS V Build

The changes you have made look really very nice, but remember that at the heart of the "build" you have the same rifle you brought home from the store.

Remember the 3"B"s of accuracy: good barrel - properly loaded bullets - proper bedding

Hey Obtunded: Pretty subtle attempt at promoting your business. That rifle is a long ways from what he brought home from the store. Not everybody wants or can afford a high end barrel....... especially at the prices "some" of you guys are charging. Just hate to see backhanded compliments.

Very nice rifle. I have two very similiar guns with HS stocks and factory SPS barrels that are incredibly accurate. You will love your timney trigger. Good work.

:D precision and distance go together, my friend! Do you need a 20MOA rail with the menace? I thought the 30mm tube gave it enough room for adjustment for longer distances....?

Please post a range report. I would like to know how it shoots those FGMM rounds. It's probably a 1:12 twist bbl eh?

This is a precision rifle forum, Presumably, people exchange dialogue in this forum in the pursuit or promotion of precision. I also promote competitive precision shooting, so I was merely imparting advice on where effort should be directed in order to achieve better results.

I made no attempt to push my business whatsoever, and in fact if I were to put a 30 cal barrel on a rifle, I would use a Canadian McPhee barrel - and I don't even sell them.

If you feel my comments MUST be some sort of subliminal attempt to self-promote, I certainly welcome you to add me to your ignore list.

Hey guys.. can we keep the slagging out of it... Obtunded made a good point with the barrel, I agree with him...

I just installed the Timney trigger about 5 mins ago and dialed it down to 2.5lbs and it is sweet. I love how much more width it has and how clean it breaks. This is gonna be an interesting summer.

You should get better than 2.5 lbs. I have both my Remmy XMark triggers under 2.5.

About the barrel, shoot this one for a year or so and then rebarrel. If it is the cal you want there is no need to swap the barrel right away unless it is a race gun. You will see a night and day difference when you do though.

Congrats on the new rifle. Feed it lots.

Merllin, nice rig there...

On the barrel topic, is there any benefit to having a 26" or 28" barrel over a 20" for precision, other than sllight increase in velocity?

No, in fact, shorter (~24") on a supported rifle is all you really need. 20"works fine too with limited loss of velocity.

Action & barel!

Brenden, I shoot some accuracy shoots and I would not even consider trying it with a factory barreled action. There is nothing that shoots like a custom barrel, trued action and a good fitting stock.
Take care and Enjoy Bill

I agree 100% that custom barrels are better in terms of extreme precision. I suppose an "accuracy shoot" is a relative term. If by that you mean benchrest, then yes custom barrels rule the roost, no question. Some factory barrels will shoot .3's or .4's consistently with the right load, trigger and bedding. I have owned a couple of them. This will never win a benchrest competetion but will certainly be all that is generally needed for any discipline where a greater degree of shooter error is introduced. Tactical matches, silhouette, hunter style shoots ect. The particular rifle in question is clearly a tactical style rifle and we can safely assume it would be a .75 MOA rifle with a little encouragement (most pss or sps HB's are). For tactical style shooting or any discipline other than benchrest style shooting .75 MOA rifles offer all the precision that 99% of marksmen can utilize. Custom barrels are awesome, I've shot many, they are superior in many ways but their advantages are only truly advantages to a very small percentage of shooters. Burning out a few factory barrels is the only way to gain the skill necessary to truly make use of a gun capable of .2's. Remember, this is his "first attempt at a precision rifle".

Burn out your factory barrel and THEN by a super-pipe. It just makes more sense.

P.S. Buy it from Obtunded, I think I may have offended him. I certainly didn't mean to.
