300 savage

Very nice cartridge and will take most big game if kept within its effective range 250 - 300 yds.

Not much for selection in store bought ammo.

I load 150gr BST for my sister at around 2500 fps and she puts deer down every year with it.

I load 130gr TSX bullets in my Dad's pump at around 2800 fps and it does the job also.

I used to really like the 300 Savage and then I bought a 7mm-08. They have about the same recoil and muzzle blast but after 200 yards the 7mm-08 just runs away on the 300 savage so I have never really looked back.

Really though absolutely nothing wrong with it.
 
A buddy of mine has one in a Jerk-o-Matic. Does a good job on deer sized creatures. I'd want somethign biger for moose, but a 300 Savage in a 99 would be a sweet little rifle.

I bought one of the Remington 700 "Classics" in 300 Savage when they were offered in 2003. When it arrived, it was an eye stopper! Beautiful dark, dark Walnut stock, deep blue, and very nice fit and finish. Even better, it is an absolute tackdriver with any 150 or 165 grain load I put through it. It is not unusual for a three shot group with the 150 partition and Reloder 15 to go under ½moa right out to 300+ yards. Best three-shot group at 100 yards [witnessed] went .040" C to C. The only thing I did to this rifle is adjust the trigger. I would have absolutely no qualms about thumping a moose with it out to 350 yards or so. It achieves muzzle velocity very close to the 308 Winchester in the bolt action with no issues. Regards, Eagleye.

I love this Cartridge!
Shot lots of deer with it and I will continue.
I like the 150 Accubonds little faster then the 180's and wouldn't think twice about shooting a moose within its effective range 200-250yards!

I will never sell my 99 in .300
 
The first big game animal I ever shot was a Moose with a borrowed Sav. 99 in .300 sav. Then over the years I shot a lot of game with a number of different rifles and cartridges.

A few years back I picked up a Sav. 99 in .300 sav. and used it that season to shoot two deer, a moose and a pair of wolves.

The 300sav is really no different than the 308win, though it is now firmly in the "you must be a handloader to proceed" list. Use a good 150gr bullet, and don't think about any perceived lack of performance.

I'll be darned, your right. I was under the assumption that only Winchester still had a load for the old cartridge, but apparently Federal and Remington still do as well. Maybe with the new barrage of stupidity going on in the U.S., Canadians that have 308win rifles should rechamber to 300sav so they can still get American ammo.

Yes but it is very pricey.

Personally I regret walking away from a chance to own a 99 in 300 Savage.
At the time I thought $200 was too much. :rolleyes: :redface:

Maybe someday I'll find one in .308. :)
 
I picked this one up in E.Ontario a few years ago. Story is a wife thought her lawyer husband would enjoy deer hunting with her brothers up north so she bought him this .300 in 1960. He supposedly shot it twice to sight it in, never shot at a deer during hunting, and put it back in closet where it stayed till he passed away.
