First time shooting pistol...

I just came back from "the shooting edge" in Calgary, where I shot a pistol, and semi-auto rifle for the first time. And I must say, the experience was just awesome.

First, the facilities. I found my "guide"(I guess you would call him) to be friendly, straight forward, and easy to understand. He helped me with all the steps, especially when one of my guns jammed.

Secondly, the guns. :D I shot a Sig sauer .40 cal, and a beretta cx4 .45 cal. The sig sauer was surprisingly handleable by someone who has never held a pistol before. After the initial "####ting bricks" feeling subsided I was surprised how much control I had in placing shots. I tried two headshots, and hit them both towards the end. The beretta was really really fun. The recoil was barely noticeable, and the rifle was really precise.

That being said, the only gun that I would consider purchasing was the Sig.
 
I think this must be some new record for thread degeneration (?) on CGN; from shooting to opera in three posts? Normally it takes at least a page for a new thread to go off topic and turn into a Glock vs.1911 rehash.

I'm glad your experience at the range was so positive. And as an admirer of both Mozart and Prokofiev (as well as others), I can only applaud your choice. I for one am glad to see a little classicism brought forward. I guess that's one of the reasons why I collect old pistols. Someone wrote at this site that guns are kind of like potato chips -- you can't have just one. So true.

Yeah, it was a pretty positive experience all around. The only thing that I'm kinda confused by is the fact that they only thing they have to shoot is either military or police(I guess you can own both weapons I shot last night). I had hoped that they would've had a few bolt-actions, as I'm just getting into the market(reading my CFSC books right now).

I love that cx4. they have one up here with a red dot sight and its wicked to use. Makes me want to buy one.

It's quite a fun rifle. The sight that they have is a bit difficult to use with the glasses and the hearing protection. Still it's just badass. I wouldn't buy one unless I was in a situation where I had "too" much money, though.

What type of sight did the have? The one here was really easy to use. The guy helping me was like now take out the kidneys (after handing me the rifle.)lmao

I'm hopeing to stop by there when im in cowtown in two weeks to try the colt ar15 .223 they got. Its been calling my name.

Yeah, I haven't lived here for very long. Just came here to go to school.

It had a pin in the front, and a circle in the back. I was really hard to line up with the earmuffs on. They should probably either make those smaller, or adjustable.

I was looking at that the other night. It looks pretty swanky. They sell an AR of some sort there. Looks like it's 1300 bucks.
 
Try a few more pistols before you lay down the cash for one.
I used to like Sigs, before I tried a few other designs that I liked better. Also it'll be quite a bit cheaper if you stay with 9mm.

Your lucky to have a commercial range where you can try before you buy.
