What powders and load data for them are you using for making major? I have used HS6, 4756, 3N37 and 3N38. I am having a hard time to find any of these available for sale. Any other suggestions for powder. Any one ever worked up a good load with Clays universal (if even poss)? Any info on the above or a source for the powder would be great.

I run 7.3 grains of Longshot, 124 grain JHP, small rifle primer, 1.250 OAL. ~169 PF through my custom open blaster, no barrel holes, Bedell comp.

I load 7.3 grains of 7625, 124 grain CMJ, small rifle primer, 1.250 OAL for my wife. ~169 PF through her custom open blaster, 2 barrel holes, STI comp.

Both my wife and I came in at 172 PF at the last match so I might back both off a bit to 7.2 grains of powder. Both powders are available at Higginsons in Ontario, that's where I typically get my powder from.

I run 8.3 grains of SR4756 behind 9mm-125-grains Zero JHP or MGB CMJ for my Bedell Shorty Custom gun. 7-port comp with no bbl holes. Small Rifle Primer with OAL = 1.240" (168-169 PF) for both projectiles.

One thing to remember if you are using IMR 4756, buy a few pounds of one lot # (I buy 12-lbs of one lot# per order). They tend to vary in velocity depending on the batch you get. Very inconsistent in lot # vs. lot #.

+1 for Higginsons Powder - That's where I get my powder stash.

7625 through my blaster with no barrel holes has more lift than Longshot; dot sometimes leaves the glass. Through my wife's blaster with barrel holes & 7625 it doesn't lift as much, dot never leaves the glass. Longshot through mine (no barrel holes) seems to be pretty comparable to 7625 through hers (with barrel holes) - in other words in mine with Longshot the dot doesn't leave the glass.

I can't say for certain but my experience leads me to believe it's the barrel holes that are making the difference since that's really the only difference between the two guns.
 
The hybrid or barrell holes make a big difference in terms of power factor in my two open guns but not so much in felt lift. I found the hs6 to load the most consistent in my dillon and less messy than the 4756 as the 4756 is almost full. I am waiting to see what higginsons has in the morning but I think they are out of stock of the three I have benn using. I may try the 7625 or longshot if there is none of the others. I find the VV cn37 and 38 a little to flamey :).
 
I have been using about 9.1 grains of 3N37 for 115 MGs. i am looking at about 8.4 grains of 3N37 for 124 MGs but i now have to switch to speers since i can't get any MGs. i was using HS7 but found it very dirty to the point in Cathy's SV she had to clean her gun part way through a match to keep it running.

I do have a jug of Accurate #9 that looks like it would make major for a super but would definitely be a better load for a 357 sig i am thinking as they are looking at 12.5 grains to make major and i don't know if a super will hold that much. i am going to see if i can get a one pound of #9 and #7 to try to see what i Can get out of a super.

was she getting fail to feeds when it needed cleaning?

124 gr. Aim plated bullet behind 8.8 grains IMR 4756 @ 1.25" OAL
173.6 power factor (Tanfoglio Gold Custom V-8)

Softest and flattest combination I've been able to find. +1 for buying in bulk.

4756 can be had at Hummason Manufacturing in Ancaster.
 
That is what has been happening to me, just needs a bump to fully close. I have been using HS6 but I never imagined it could be that dirty a powder. It has been driving me nuts. I even bought a new aftec to try.

I am going to try some 3n37 I have and see if it acts different.

By the way I found powders are getting scarce so I ordered/bought some 4756. I always was using it but the HS6 was cheaper and really didn't feel much different.

At higginson powder 4lb HS6 is $88 and 4756 is $104 , plus I found I get more loads per pound out of the HS6. But the problems i was having with the fail to fully close if somewhat HS6 induced, I would have paid almost anything to have avoided it.

Only time will tell and some different powders.;)
 
i think you will like the 3N37. it is a nice soft shooting load and we have had no problems with dirty guns with it.

I am going to see if i Can get some one pound jugs o the Accurate #7 and #9 to try.
 
A customer of mine in BC told me yesterday he has tried the new Winchester Accucomp - got it from Higginson. He liked it.
At SHOT where it was intruduced, it was promoted as being a low weight, not filling a 9mm case and having lots of gas for comps.
It sounds perfect, of course, that's marketing - we need to actually try it too.
 
I have heard some complaints about Accucomp. A powder I have been doing a little experimenting with for super is Lil Gun. This is available at higginson. It make a 38 super behave like a bottle neck cartridge. Tons of gas, make the comp work really efficiently, there is more recoil but hot as harsh as the bottle neck cartridges.
 
According to me the best powders for 38S are:

8.6-8.7 Vit 3N37 with 125 HP at 1.235 loa shoots snappy with recoil up and down

8.5-8.6 IMR 4756 with 125 HP at 1.235 loa shoots soft but dot tends to track up to the right a bit.

You will have to try both as they may track differently in your gun and the important thing is how fast you can get your 2 A hits, not how nice the powder feels.

Vit 3N38 is very nice too but is hard to get and you will need about 9.7 - 10 grains

HS6 is dirty and will give the slide a clunking feel and then later jam the gun.
