Looking to buy my first hunting rifle

I need a little advice here from you guys. I am looking to buy my first hunting rifle. I am just looking for something on a budget now as I am just getting into hunting and I don't want to spend a ton of money to get started. For the most part I plan on hunting Deer and hopefully Moose and Bear.

The rifle I have my eye on is a Remington 700 SPS that is on sale at Bass Pro for $499, and I think I have decided to get it in .308.

Do you guys think that rifle will be well rounded enough to use on those 3 types of animals? Let me know your thoughts and if you have any better suggestions.

Should work fine. .308 is a nice little cartridge. Lots of factory ammo available, modest recoil, accurate enough, etc....
The rifle is a fine entry level rifle. Nothing wrong with the 700. The trigger is too heavy for me right out of the box, but a $35 tirgger job can fix that really quick. The SPS's stock is a little flimsy, as in flexible in the wrong places, like the forearm. 700 stocks are pretty common is you would like to upgrade at some point.
For the money and what you want to hunt, it sounds like a good choice.
Spend all that you can on QUALITY optics. There is nothing worse than missing an opportunity to harvest an animal because of scope fog or poor low light transmission.
 
Check the EE, you'll probably get a rifle/scope setup that'll be cheaper then buying just a new rifle. Spend the extra cash on some ammo and get out and shoot.
 
The 308win is an excellent cartridge for a beginner, or anyone for that matter. The Remington is a good choice, but you may also want to check out offerings from Stevens, Marlin, and Weatherby, as their fit and finish seems to be better for the money at this time.

That will cover your needs, and the price is right. I have an SPS .308 here that shoots really well. Hopefully BassPro has more than one...:D
 
I'd give the EE a try first (that's just me) You may get a decent gun and scope for $500 or so,... or even mention it here on the thread if you'd consider used. Many guys around here are more than willing to help out with first rifles !!:)

Other than that. Absolutely nothing wrong with the rifle you chose. There are enough upgrades for it that you can decide where you want to with it.
You can stay as is... or get into triggers and stocks, etc etc...
The calibre.... do a search for ".308 hmmmmm...." ...

And .303 is 95% of what .308 is!

Consider a P14/M17 or SMLE or No4 (I say SMLE because most people think of the No1 Rifle that way - it's the WWI version, rather than the No4, which was the WWII & Korea version, so to speak)

Should be LOTS of them on The Rock.

With excellent barrel and properly set up they are as accurate as any commercial rifle under $1000. and some like the P14/M17 can be more accurate than most.

Nothing impresses/pisses the super-de-duper stainless and plastic crowd more than being outshot by an old milsurp!:D
 
Nothing wrong with the choice of rifle nor the .308 Win., both will serve you well. I have to agree with the opinions about saving for decent optics - you'll be glad you did!
