Information on Kentucky Long Rifle

This percussion rifle was found in a cottage in Eastern Ontario Canada. The barrel is marked Remington. The barrel and lock plate are marked J. Sweeney. I can find no information on this person to date. The rifle is around 5 ft long and has a full wood stock. I would be interested to know where and approximate date it was made and a value. I have included several pictures to help with identification.

Remington supplied barrels to many makers. There was a J L Sweeney who worked out of New Haven, Conn in 1879 and 80 and possibly he was the son of the maker of your rifle.
The gun is in excellent condition and I would think it was worth a couple of thousand but that is a wild guess on my part

Nice score and a beautiful rifle! It is in such good shape my first impression was that it was a repro. I have found the best way to get a realistic price on anything is to shop around for one as close as possible to yours. I would even be happy with a nice repro of one.

That is one dreamy rifle you have there!

A tiny bit of linseed on the stock and some oil on the steel and in the barrel will save her from any further deterioration.

Can you tell if the rifling is that deep further down the barrel, or is that just filing at the crown?

I'd post on the muzzleloaders and mountain man sites to look for an appraiser. There are enough things "bright" with your rifle for a layman to give you an opinion. There is a builder in Brockville who was featured on the CJOH weekend regional show a few years ago.

I would say so, I had an original Ohio halfstock that had rifling smiliar to that.

The rifling appears to be cut all the way.
