Well, I went out with a range buddy the other day shooting his compound bow on a closed range.

I gotta say, it was loads of fun and I was very surprised how accurately I could shoot, even out to 50 yards. I must of shot about 30-40 arrows and had a blast.

A compound bow is definitely in the works for me in the future. I had been thinking about it for quite some time because the deer season is significantly longer in these parts when using a bow.

What do you all think about shooting bow vs shooting a gun, for me, although a love shooting guns, theres something about watching an arrow fly through the air to the target, very smooth, very quiet, and undoubtedly, very lethal.
 
I love bowhunting, probably moreso than gun hunting! (For deer)

Time is the big thing, you better your chances greatly by being able to spend more time afield. When I'm on limited time, usually the gun will come first.
 
Deer hunting with a bow is a totally different game. You have to have a calm animal inside 40 yards or so and broadside. Not that easy to do. Rifles are way easier to harvest game obviously. Rarely will a deer jump out of the way of a bullet upon it being sent the deers way. Deer can jump the string and the arrow flies over their back as they crouch down to jump up. Get a bow, practice and have a blast. You will have a whole new appreciation for the hightened senses of a deer when you are in that close.....
 
Well I been killing deer with both for 35 years, and the advantage goes to the bow hunter, don't take this the wrong way, some hunters, it don't matter the means, results are the same, they suck:D;)
I say this because , with archery gear, you have to deal with a few snags, like , movement, scent, and time.
The window is 3-7 seconds most times to get on tgt, and loose.
A must to watch terrain for wind currents that will mess you up (close range sport)
Movement is critical, gotta know , when, where, and how to get that arrow in the lungs/heart/liver..
Tips, practice from as many angles as poss, also elevation to a stand site , a good idea, helps with the above.Bend or turn at the waist , keep all other areas the same.
Don't take a shot that has not been practiced, The short time I did use sights, I only had one pin, set at 20 meters.
If in a stand, shoot low, to place a good shot into the near lung, and take the heart out, on the way out, for a good trail to follow.
Watch the deer or other game real careful, for angle change, which will change your aim.
Keep those heads sharp, and good luck, its very much fun. Oh the advantage
archers have, you hunt areas where shots are close, big scrapes, and rubs.
The rifle hunter may pass a hot spot to head over to an area where longer shots, and more area to watch is available.
Not bashing gun hunters here, I are one to.:D

Now what you must do is go shoot a longbow or recurve. I shot compund for about 4-5 months and then sold it and now have longbows.

Yes , the stick and string, I took it to another level, and make English Longbows, with cow horn nocks, and flemish string, and cedar arrows.
All home built, D shape selfbow, 6 ft, 70 lbs. arrows pass clean through the animal , gotta love it.
 
If one goes the barebow route, the book entitled "Become the Arrow" by champion bow shooter,
Byron Ferguson is a MUST read!
It's not too long either, and full of a ton of useful information.
Fred Bear & Harry Pope wrote a few great archery books as well.

What kind of wood are you using? And where did you get it?
It is something I want to start, a next winter project I want to get ti together this summer.

Yew, Vancouver Island , old growth, 3500-5000 ft elevation. these trees , are very old , under the old stuff, 9 inch trunk, can be 50-100 years old.
Got the horn from dixie guns works, 3 inch ends of black solid horn, drilled from the pointy end, and carved the heavy for looks , and function.

Osage Orange is harder to work, but makes a fine bow with equal cast.

That looks good. I have a writeup i got from a friend about how to make a bow and he made his with a 2x4 for ####s and giggles and it worked ok I was thinking as an inexpensive first try it might work.

Osage you can work pretty much right way.Yew is much different, 4 years air dry, no kiln, english like 7 years, can speed it up under water, still sucks... but mine is 16 years now, deep red heart, and white sap.in billets:D
 
Great thread, this summer I will be practicing with the compound bow, hopefully for moose season.
And I do have a delightful Browning Fury II 54#, glass backed laminated recurve, that must some day be used for deer hunting.
(I hate saying next year but there it is, I want to shoot full bore target rifle, this summer as well!)

Bow hunting is a real rush. I used to do it but gave it up a few years ago. I only shot one animal with the bow and it was a P&Y black bear. I may take it up again in a few years. It is definitely the best time of the year to be out in the woods.

how's Schultz 71 # takedown, (like a black widow), a Brakenbury 66'' 69# , with a 62'' 54# set of limbs to fit same riser, A fox 62'' 62# longbow, with rawhide quiver, a martin longbow, rattle snake on that one, and also on the Hatfield takedown recurve, Selfbows, The Iceman , made it 65# 68'',called this one War bow (71# 72''), my first back in 93 , got 3 Blacktail with it that year. added to the text under war bow (3 for 3 in 93)
This fello shooter made some awesome Back quivers, elk hair inside, buttons of blacktail around the rim, a pouch with coyote hair , and deer leather main body, the large body is of steer full , not split.
And a few deer antler tips on leather lace, well stitched, amazing leather wizzard,
Port orford cedar is amazing, the aroma is stunning, and dipping, cresting, caping, and some brush work, top it all of with real barred turkey feathers, wow stunning in a back quiver...
I like Zwickey heads, the 2 blade Delta,with bleeders, for sure a blade to use over and over...

Most of it Southpaw , got about 17 years one way and 10 the other.
but as a child , the slingshot was crazy, I just took to it like the folks you see on youtube shooting, and i shot left then.
Gotta love archery
