the first time i've ever shot a gun ,i was using an 1911 (i demanded it to be even when i have 6 guns to choice from) i shot a few mags with "comfort" grip, then my friend point out that i should hold the gun by resting the thumb on safety.i felt the difference right the way even tho i was new to the sport then. i've never went back to the comfort grip. it just doesnt feel right to hold a gun any other way

What? I thought you are supposed to by a gun based on how comfy it is in your hand? ;)

only when you know how to hold it the right way. then buying a gun that feels right in hand is a plus. ;)

here are few of my handling experence

SP01 = truly like grabbing tits and great to shoot.
1911s= not the nicest grip to hold all day and the comfort way is not the best way.
sig 226 = a gun that works but the grip is too thick for me to shoot as well as other pistols
glock = a badly angled slippy top heavy plastic tube which i dont get feed back from

thumb on the safety, always. using the thumb over thumb method leaves less patch contact area between your support hand and the gun, as well as contributing to a whole bunch of other issues. The old "crushing" grip has been beaten out of most instructors, the only ones I still see teaching it are old school mounties. but they are more ####ed up than a football bat so..............

I realized something when reading an article.

It will also make a difference if you are using one hand or two hands. If I am shooting one handed, then my preferred grip is under the safety for better "twisting" control, while my two handed grip is always thumb over the safety.

It doesn't mention it in this article, but some interesting

Thats a tough one, all the pros have their thumbs on the safety, but it would seem that mall ninjas and gunstore commando's advocate not doing so. What do Todd Jarrett, Rob Leatham, Jerry Barnhart, Mike Voight, Doug Koineg, Travis Tommasie, Max Michel, Brad Balsley, Taren Buttler, Chris Tilley,,,,,,,,, know about shooting 1911's

these guys probably shot more rounds than the CGN pistol community combine. AND THEY DONT KNOW ####! :D

there is also one other reason for thumb on the safety, it's so that during the recoil event you don't accidental push the safety back on. I can't count the number of shooters I've seen do this at IPSC matches or even just at the range.
