I Just bought a 22LR Thompson centre R55 Benchmark. What type of scope sould I put up top. I'm planning on doing some Metallic silhouette shooting and some gopher tagging.

I have 3x9x by 40 scopes on all my .22s. Quite ample for gophers and silhouettes. I shoot out to 150 yards and this power is easier to focus on near shots and does the job for the longer ones.

If you going to shoot Silhouette with any regularity, then your going to want at least 16X at the higher end and a scope with really good repeatability.
Don't cheap out, I'm running a 4-16 Bushnell 4200 and it's about the minimum I'd consider.
Cheers,
Grant

I recently bought one of the BassPro RedHead brand 3-9 scopes to try out on my VQ 10/22....works great and they are CHEAP!!

I have a VXII 4.5-14x40 AO on my Sako quad and would consider that magnification the minimum for shooting paper. I'm not sure what silhouette is like. When I'm shooting gophers it's usually set on 10x.

Start shooting offhand if you plan on metallic silhouette shooting. It's going to be the most demanding of your ability and equipment. You'll soon realize the shortfalls of your equipment. As Grantmac stated, a good midrange variable is excellent. Repeatability of adjustments is a must. In a 40shot silo match, shooting both hunter and standard with one gun you will be making 8 elevation changes unless you're using holdover/under to account for trajectory. Target style turrets are preferable for ease of adjustment.
