338 Edge.

The more I think about it, I wonder if there si any benefit to AI'ing or Edg'ing your 338. The reason being is that if you go with a non-standard chamber then you have to fireform all your brass. That means at least 200 rounds down the barrel before you can even start serious load development. Why not run a long-tubed 338 RUM and be done with it, saving the wear and tear on your new match tube?

I ran the 338 Ultra in a hunting rifle for quite a few years (I had one of the first in the country) and it really is a great cartridge. The one and only problem is the brass.
Going to the Edge allows the use of Nosler brass and given the same velocity operates at lower pressures.

Yes, the brass life is lower than the Lapua, but I have never had a problem getting 5 firings. Best accuracy comes at relatively mild pressures so I don't see why brass life would be a serious issue??

We were out yesterday and again today with a couple .338 Edges amoung other things. My range is still a work in progress, but 730 yard ( longest current position) groups varied from 1/2 to 1 MOA in 9 mph winds. I try to at least get new target holder or firing position going every trip out, without making it into work. Next will be a 1/2 mile position.

Glad to hear things are going well for you!

What load are you using??

I'd be more worried about barrel life than brass life. Fireforming brass puts wear on your barrel without giving you any benefit, other than hearing the rifle go "boom".

The 338 RUM case is shorter than the 7mm RUM or 300 RUM for safety reasons. The .338 Edge uses the 7mm or 300 brass that is around .084" longer to the shoulder which gives more case capacity than the standard .338 RUM. The .338 Edge has a slightly shorter shoulder than the 7mm or 300 so bumping it back after necking up is normally required, fireforming is not necessary.

Not sure what you are referring to here?

Mine are both set up with tight headspace (0.000 by request)....I do have a tight fit on the first firing, but have never noticed having to bump the shoulder back after necking up?

FWIW my 338 Ultra was set up so I did have to bump the shoulder slightly. It is the most accurate hunting rifle (of its power) that I have ever seen.

I've read lots of claims, but considering the increase in CC and doing the math (10% increase in CC equals 2.5% increase in velocity), with equal pressures I would figure only 75-100 fps. I know plenty of folks who chroney higher then that, but it could be fast barrels, or the human propensity for "just a little more powder". I also have a buddy who gets 7 mag velocities from his 280, so take it for what it's worth. - dan

X-fan, my new PT&G match reamer & headspace spec is 7 thou shorter, of course there are more than one reamer print and headspace gauge. I was told by the man that bumping would be normal. I don't know why or when the spec changed but my reamer was made 03/02/09.

Just completed my 338 Edge last night.

Mine is a JGS....I don't think my reamer is set up that "tight".
I actually like the idea and as I mentioned I set up my 338 Ultra that way.

Moose,
Nice rig !
What does it weigh?

Big Ugly,
I think Dan B has it right...The Edge seems good for about 100fps max velocity over the Ultra.
