Mil Spec buffer tubes??

i too have been looking for a long time for an actual answer to that.

why is there 2 different types (milspec and commercial) to begin with .

It probably goes back to the days when the fire control and take-down pins were different size too so you couldn't put military stuff on your civvy gun.

I've had BOTH size of tubes on my Armalite and I still cannot figure out WHY there are 2 different spec'ed sizes. IN the end , I kept the commercial tube on my Armalite and sold my last Milspec tube! Since Obama Bin Laden got elected all the AR parts have become scarce! :( Especially at Brownell's... they know about what can and cannot be shipped North of the Border. They used to have a great selection of Magpul goodies, but that's history!

Speaking of Brownells and Magpul stuff....you pretty much have to just call and ask if they have an item in stock as the webstore is not getting updated regularly. I just got at Magpul CTR from them and they were listed as out of stock all the time, but what do you know, you call, and they have lots :)

Wait a second, wait a second here. They shipped you a Magpul ctr stock??:D

You live in Canada??

Milspec tubes are forged.

Commerical tubes ( some ) are extrusion tubes and the end was welded on.

Diameter is another thing -but it is not an indication of how it is made.

Where you order, i need one

Brownells in the U.S. You need to call though, as they have them in stock, but are listed on the webstore as none available. Ordered mine on the 20th and checked my tracking number today.....parcel is already in Calgary. I should have it tomorrow........only 5 business days, thats service!!!

State Dept., I think. Honestly I've lost track of what the reasons were but at one point they were saying milspec collapsible stocks are component parts of automatic weapons so they can't be exported. So there was a "commercial" diameter. But then were milspec diameters made by companies that don't make full-autos, so basically it's a question of phoning the State Dept. and seeing if they've taken their Prozac that particular day because it's a never-ending paperchase of bull####.

I don't think it is because of the State dept. this time. We have both versions here in the States and I have a bunch of collapsing stocks from the '80s that are of commercial diameter. I still think it is something Colt specified back in the day so civilians wouldn't have military components on the Ar-15s. Just like the large diameter fire control pins and the takedown pins with the screw in them.
