I'm getting a insert for my o/u 20g and was told that a 22 mag out of a 4" barrel would be about the same as a 22lr from a rifle barrel. What do you guys think if i was using fmj 22 mags would it be over kill?

No on the game, yes on you, GOOD plugs a must, or you will do damage:)
make sure your legal to hunt with that, it won't be accurate..
LOL, sorry , it won't be bad from a 20 barrel, and accuracy will be so so, 10 meter maybe.

lol let me clarify the shot gun has 26" barrels the insert will have a 4" barrel NOT THE SHOT GUN ITSELF lol:D

I know for a fact that a 22LR form a 4" barrel will kill a grouse. I also know that a 20 guage is a great grouse gun, and dont' know why you woudl want to mess with inserts for it in the first place:D

well let me help, how much does a 50 20's weigh?:p

lol thats not the problem i had lets say an "issue" involving a grouse in a tree last year that made me wish i had a 22 handy (blew the top half of him off:redface:) and so i looked at combo guns but i figured throwing a decent insert in my ithaca 500 would be cheaper. I was looking at the magnetic hi-viz front and reat sights for half decent accuracy.

it did flush the previous 4 time........ it was really thick cover ok :D but seriously would the 22 mag be over kill considering its only comming from a 4" insert or not
