I finally got around to taking some pictures to share my new build. Last summer I took one of my Model 70's to Corlane's for a bit of a makeover and late last fall it was completed. I finally got around to taking it out of the safe and am just getting ready to work up some loads so as of yet, it's still unfired. The .338-06 has always struck me as an ideal non-magnum cartridge for hunting moose, elk & bear here in BC so I decided to finally combine the two for my personal heavy game rifle. Corlane's installed a fully free-floated Pac-Nor SS #1 sporter barrel with the shank turned to the original fwt spec's. To keep the weight down it's fluted, finished at 23" and the muzzle rifling is protected with a recessed crown. The bolt lugs are hand lapped for 100% even contact, trigger breaks like glass @ 3lbs and the whole enchilada is powder coated black matte which mates nicely with the scope. The stock wears a Pachmyer Decelerator pad on the butt. It's topped with a Leupold VariX III 2.5x-8x in Talley one piece mounts and the whole package weighs in at 7lbs 4oz empty. I'm thinking of ordering a McMillan stock for it but I think it's nice eye candy as is. Now to see if it will shoot minute-of-moose...

Nice rifle there Kurt! :)

As I have always said if I was forced to own only one big game rifle for use here in BC it would be chambered in 338-06.

Nice rig, well planned. I'm surprised that they fluted a #1 contour, in a .338 bore. Did Corlane's do it or Pac-nor?

Just promise not to shoot 160 gr bullets, 'kay?

didn't I sell you some 160gr TTSX last year?

Umm, err...I only wanted to see what velocities I could reach with 160's in the .338-06...honest  Perhaps I might leave the .270's in the safe and try a 160 on a deer...for research purposes? For the hunting I had this built for, I'm leaning towards 210-225's depending on how it groups. Or even 250's for up close :D

Gorgeous gun. I love the wood and the lines on the Featherweight are really something, definitely one of my all-time favorite rifles. .338-06 is a great choice for heavy game which may suddenly decide to fight back. The 210gr Nosler Partition seems to be made for the .338-06 - great combination of weight and trajectory for most hunting situations. You could probably run the 200gr. Ballistic Tip for a little more BC on deer and flatten it out a bit more, and I know of a few guys in Alaska from Accurate Reloading forums using .338-06 with 225 and 250 bullets in the thick brush for big bears.
