Model 70 Fwt .338-06

Umm, err...I only wanted to see what velocities I could reach with 160's in the .338-06...honest

let us know how fast they go. I think 3100-3150 should be possible with safe pressures. I was getting almost 3000 in my 22.5" barrel 338F with 51 grs Benchmark. Very accurate bullet too!

I am getting just under 3150fps with the 160 TTSX out of my 338-06 with 24" barrel with good accuracy.

My favorite 338-06 bullets are still the 200 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip (2900 fps) and the 225 Hornady SP (2700+ fps). My "heavy" load is 250 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws at 2600 fps.

A 250gr TBBC at 2600fps? Now that's a hammer! Which powders have you found work best for your 200gr-225gr loads, Gary?

Yes it is a thumper! I just wish Speer would have kept the 250 TBBC when they bought the rights from Jack Carter. I am down to my last 20 cartridges loaded with this bullet and am planning on trying the Swift 250 A-Frame as a replacement.

With the 250s nothing I have tried beats Winchester 760 lit with a Winchester Large Rifle primer. Cases are necked up Remington 30-06 brass.

with the 200 & 225 I have good luck with IMR and Hodgdon 4350, IMR 4064 and Reloder 15.

Sweet rig BC BigBore. I really like my 338-06AI Corlanes built. How many flutes/cut depth did you get on a #1 PacNor barrel.

I'm reloading 225gr Accubonds and TTSX's. So far Accubonds are the only ones shot while breaking inrifle barrel and fireforming brass.

Thanks 'Boo, I have some IMR4350 & H4350 in my stash so I'll start there. I have piles of .30-06 brass to work up loads for this .338-06, but I bought some Weatherby brass to have properly headstamped cases for my hunting loads. They cut six flutes on the Pac-Nor but I never mic'd the depth, Mighty Peace. Have you worked up any full house loads for your Sako and put 'em across a chrony? Your AI version should be comparable to Z-Hat's .338 Hawk, another non-magnum with magnum thump.

Interesting conversion.

I presume the original caliber was 30-06 and you had it re-bored to .338. I did something similar with a S/S Remington 700 SPS DM going from 30-06 to 35 Whelen. I wanted to have it fluted with a 20" barrel and the gentleman doing the work - the well known Ron Smith from Alberta recommended against it, especially if the gun was going to be used in cold weather. This is because of the possibility of metal fracture due to the weakening of the metal by fluting. It made sense to me and decided against fluting.

The gun is stainless steel to be coated with one of the new products in camo color. The stock is synthetic in camo and the barrel will have a gain twist appropriate for the 35 Whelen. It should be ready shortly and will be used for heavy bush deer hunting using 250 gr bullets.

Good luck with your project!

I have one in a Mauser 66 but no time to do any load development at this time, If you come up with something that shoots well would you advise the best load that works for your gun, it would be a good starting point to develop a load for my gun.
Thanks for your help.

I was suppose to have 6 flutes cut into the barrel, but they accidently cut 8. I did the same - just to have the brass with proper headstamp...I should of bought more than the 2 boxes of Weatherby brass. I have a bag of 50 30-06 nickel Remington cases but not going to use them. I have a friend that comes to Alberta to hunt from the USA and I going to get him to bring about 100 Weatherby/Norma brass from Midway USA.

I will be reloading the fireformed brass this week and hopefully get to the range. So far only shot the 225gr AB's for fireforming brass and break-in of barrel. Getting 0.5" 3 shot groups so far, so I'm happy. As for a chrony, its next on my list. Need to discuss this investment with my reloading buddy again.
