I came across a second hand Smith model 29 highway patrolman tonight, it is blued, with approx 6" barrel. It is in nice condition, not new but not beat up either. What is something like that worth? It is .357
The very nice S&W model 28 Highway Patrolman was my very first new revolver. Wish I still had it. It was and still is a superb gun. Mine was a six inch and I used it for many years as my primary PPC gun. It ate just about anything with its beefy "N" frame.
A truly fine gun, the model 28 was built fine and was very durable. It would shoot 148 grain wadd cutters just as well as full bore .357 magnum rounds. Damn, I wish I still had it....
Nice guns as I have a couple of them. One is real nice and I just shoot targets with it but the other has holster wear and is the early S serial number ones. Those S serial ones sell for a premium here and have the best triggers of any of the N frames. I carry mine quite a bit while hunting or just out in the woods as I live in the States as a little more wear won't hurt it's value.
I can't speak on it's value in Canada but here any older S&W has jumped in value the last few years. I paid $650.00 recently for a nice Model 25 in .45Long Colt and probally around $250.00 for those Model 28s 5 or 6 years ago (US $s).
I highly recommend them and they aren't making anymore of them.
If recent prices on the EE are still valid, look around the $500-600 mark. I seem to recall a couple for sale not that long ago in that range. I absolutely love mine.
I think it's more like a Model 27. the Hiway Patrolman was black not blued, and had a 4" barrel for comfortable holster carry while sitting in a patrol car.
