9mm or .45 acp for first handgun

Since its going to be near impossible for me to find the .45 long colt.

I want your opinions guys should I get a .45 acp or 9mm. I like the price of the 9mm ammo but enjoying the punch of the 45. I was looking at a couple cz tactical models at my local gun shop and they were hot in 9mm but I've always had a fondness for the ole faithful 1911

I'd like some input from some people with more experience
 
I recommend a quality .22 for a first handgun. They're cheap to feed and easy to shoot well. When you have become proficient with the .22, you can work your way up to more powerful guns.

Do you plan on reloading? If not, I would recommend 9mm on the basis of ammo cost. .45 ACP can be reloaded for not much more cost than 9mm if you use cast bullets.
 
You want to have a caliber you can afford to shoot.

if you like 1911's you're in luck. .45 and 9mm are both available in that platform. You can also find a .22 conversion, including the Marvel .22 conversion for 1911 which is super accurate.

I personally like 1911's in 9mm. The frame is overengineered for that round so longevity is very good.
 
I like the 9mm because the reloading costs are (well...were fairly cheap) and thus, I can shoot it a lot. Volume of shooting IMO is just as important as what your shooting, but then again, I won't ever own guns that just collect dust.
 
You said it yourself, 9mm is cheaper than .45. Btw, I just bought a CZ Shadow, and I can't wait to get to the range. I've heard nothing but good about these pistols, especially the trigger. Mine has a nice clean break at 4lbs. I love how it fits in my hand, and I like the fiber optic foresight, too.

Thats one of the ones I handled. I've never felt a handgun that fit my hand so well. it was like it was custom made for me. I've been around guns all my life but for some reason I never went for my license till now

1911's are nice and they're fun to shoot but 9mm is so much cheaper, imo for your first handgun go with .22 or 9mm. Shoot lots and then shoot more!
 
9mm 1911

I prefer Commander length. Para makes one. Or if you like the STI ranger II, but it's dust cover is government length so it won't fit finely boned Commander holsters.

What I would do would be to buy actually a .22 semi first thats affordable, like a sig misquito thats slightly used. Or if you like the 1911, get a kimber or STI and buy a .22 conversion kit for it and use it to get your fundamentals down for pistol shooting like the follow through and proper grip. Then by choosing that option you can take the top end off and runn a .45! But if money is a bit of an option 9mm or even .40 S&W is always cheaper then .45

Go for the .45ACP for the extra punch you first mentioned and also a .22lr.

Then move on to a .44mag revolver for teeth rattling punch:D

Unless you plan on shooting hundreds of rounds a year, .45 isn't much more than 9mm.

You are correct in your origional fondness of the 1911:
