My NEW duck boat, a LOWE 1440M & Honda 4 stroke 9.9HP outboard. UPDATED @ POST 23...

Hey guys;

I just replaced my 10 foot flat bottom boat with a 14 flat bottom boat. We mostly hunt small water & beaver ponds (a true secret duck hotspot with NO competition), so this setup is perfect.

This boat is slightly deeper than my old boat & I could climb into the boat from the side. These little work horses sure are stable & FUN!

Cheers
Jay

The OLD setup, note the BEAVER POND, they ROCK for duck hunting!

I took WING NUT II for a rip tonight, what a blast! I guess I should mention that I backed the boat in WITHOUT putting the plug in place, ha ha ha, Huntress noticed that the boat was filling up with water... ha ha ha So, I said, no worry, this is a learning lesson, I have a trick for getting the water out... We jumped in with the dog (loves the boat) and got 'er up to full tilt... I then pulled the plug & the suction proceeded to drain all the water from the boat, Huntress was impressed...

Overall, the 9.9HP is enough to get the boat up on plane, but, I do see the "modification" of my 9.9 to a 15HP in my near future... I'm not sure that the engine has enough power to get a fully loaded (with camping gear etc) boat up on plane...

With 15HP, I think it will be great!

how do you go about modding it to make 15hp?

Well... Honda didn't want to make 2 different motor's, a 9.9 & a 15... So they made the 15 HP and put a throttle limiting screw (painted yellow so you can't "miss it"...) and smaller jets in the carb & called it a 9.9 HP... For this engine, the owners manual & repair manual are the same for the "BF 9.9HP/BF 15HP"...

So... REMOVE the screw & change the jets & you have an instant 15 HP!!! Should add just enough more zip to the setup to make me even happier! YA BABY YA!!!

By just removing the throttle limiting screw & NOT changing the jets in the carb, you go from 9.9HP to 13.2HP... Pretty quick modification for a little more power...

That's Bull$hit. I know exactly where your little "Secret" spot is!!

And get outta there....you're trespassing!!

LOL

:D

Love the jon boats!

Congrats on the boat, I have a 1436 JON with 9.9 Yamaha 2 stroke and it flys. 4-strokes are nice but don't compare to 2-Strokes for instant power/weight. I hope to carb mod works out for you.

any idea if that mod will work on yamaha 9.9 4 strokes? im looking to purchase a new 15hp in a week or 2 but if i can get the cheaper 9.9 and mod it ill go that route.

did you do much research before buying the outboard? if so, what made you pick a honda?

Excellent question canadian hunter312! Umm... I was looking for a new motor, found this one used online & local... I wanted to avoid having to register the boat, which you have to do once you use a motor 10HP or larger...

So, I had decided on the 9.9HP. Once I had bought the motor, I was searching online for the owners manual AND the maintenance (shop) manual... I found the owners manual easily, but could not find the shop manual... What I DID notice was that ALL references to the 9.9 ALSO included the 15HP... In my case, Honda BF9.9/BF15... Some of these references were "chat forums" where I quickly discovered that the Honda 9.9 HP IS a 15 HP motor that has been limited by (1) jets in the carb & (2) a throttle limiting screw...

So, I sorta "lucked" out... And YES, removing the screw MAKES a difference. I had the boat out yesterday after removing it & I would estimate a 20% increase. I wish my damn GPS was working, then I could have done a trial run with the throttle limiting screw in place & then with it out...

Either way, I'm very happy with the setup. It doesn't break any speed records, but it's quick enough for me. Last "modification" will be a 10 pitch prop, it currently has the factory original 9 pitch... This motor can accept 3 props, a 8,9 or 10 pitch... Depending on how your "application", one prop or the other will perform better...

32 km/h, clocked with the GPS, VERY HAPPY! I just dropped the outboard motor off to have it serviced... Remember, I bought it used, so I really don't know much use it has seen... They are going to do a full tune up, adjust the valves and I am getting the 10 pitch prop. I'll let you guys know what the top end speed is with the new prop on it!

Cheers
