SKS Newbie help

I am a total newbie to SKS's. I have no immediate knowledge of what they are, where they came from or how to use one. I have a few questions if someone could appease me.

First, is there any difference between "Russian SKS" and "Norinco SKS", or is the Norinco just another knockoff?

Second, what is a stripper clip and how do they work?

Third, are there any SKS's with removable magazines? I've seen some places that have "20 - 30 - 40+ round magazines". How does the removable magazine work if most SKS's I've seen come with "internal box magazines"

Generally speaking, detatchable magazines for SKS's are not all that great, you find them in the garbage bins at the range all the time ... lol

The Russians invented the SKS, and it was produced in many countries, including China. The Russian guns are generally better built than the Chinese ones when it comes to fit and finish. Both should be of comparable functionality and accuracy.
 
Google is your friend, and theres a ton of stickys on the site, but the norinco is the chinese version of the original russian, stripper clip is a clip that grabs the rim of your ammo, you simply line it up above the reciever in the stripper clip guide and push in your ammo, especially since most sks have attached magazines. Pretty sure most of the norincos have removable mags and the ones you get up here are of course pinned at 5

mine has a cylinder of some sort welded to the bottom
if this were dremeled out would it hold 10?
if this were dremeled out would it be breaking any laws of any sort?

The cylinder is to 'pin' the 10 round internal magazine to 5 rounds.

If you dremeled this out, you would be violating Canadian law that roughly and with a few exceptions states that magazines designed for semi-automatic rifles must be limited to holding 5 or less rounds.

Understood, thanks.. "the pin stays in" just wanted clarification re: law.

but that being said i know some .22's semis have clips of 10

Right, no limit for rimfire, no limit for bolt/lever/pump guns, semi auto pistols are limited to 10. There are some oddities out there, like the AR-15 'pistol' mags that are limited to 10 rounds, but work in any AR-15/180B type rifle and are legal. I'm pretty sure there is also an exception for the M1 Garand, which is legally allowed to have 8 rounds (the original Enbloc clip) and if I recall, some other strange verbage about Enfields being allowed to have more than 5 even though they are bolt action rifles and thus not limited by the law.

It's been a while since I've looked at the law, so I'm a bit rusty.
 
Technically Norinco was/is a Marketing Company. Basically Chi-Com SKSs fall into two categories. Ones made for Military and ones made for the Commercial Market. The SKS D and M use AK 47 detachable magazines.

Alright, now I'm confused.

Say I want an "SKS D or M", how do I tell them apart? Actually, what are the differences between the two.

The D looks pretty much like a normal SKS but with a different mag. It might or might not have a bayonet. The M has a monte carlo stock,or a thumbhole type. Basically more of sporterized looking gun. I've never seen a M with a bayonet.
 
Read those stickies! I knew NOTHING about the SKS before I read them. Now I can identify make, year, ect. Trust me, you will feel like a smart a** after reading those threads.

X2 Woodbeef!!! The D's I have encountered have the Bayo, the MC-5D are the para troppers version without the Bayo, Guys correct if I'm wrong but I think thats the difference, Curtton what's the story????
