New Hunting Partner

Got some new pics from the breeder this morning that I thought I'd post.

The old 'yours is the blonde with the blue ribbon' trick! I love it. You can paint a toenail too to make sure the ribbons dont get chewed off and mixed up if you are bonding with that pup.
I'd suggest one of the airline approved plastic dog boxes that will fit him when hes full grown. that way you can use it if you fly with him later in life (my one dog could have her own air miles). They also provide some privacy and warmth/windblock. Then cut a piece of plywood to fit the inside contours and wire it to the air vent mesh to reduce the 'living space' in it to match a puppy. that way the little beggar cant walk to the back corner and take a dump, then go to the front corner and take a nap- VERY helpful when crate training. Speeds up the process, makes everyone happier and you just move the plywood wall as he grows. Puppies should make it 3-4h no problem so just accept that you will get up that often for 10min to do the duty. It only lasts the first month and you are off to the races!
 
Congrats you lucky bugger:) I have loved brittnays since hunting over my friends. From the time we were able to hunt on our own until that dog passed away that was all we did was bird hunt. We used to pretend to go deer hunting but we would always find a nice piece of cover and spend the day chasing birds. Nothing better than a rock solid point. I envy you.

Aside from the puppy course do you have a training plan laid out for your future bird dog?

It wouldn't be hard to pick him out from the litter anyway... he was the only orange male.

Thanks for the advice on the crate. I'm looking this week. I went to Regina on the weekend and was very disappointed with the selection at the three pet stores I went to. I was advised to try COSCO but I don't have a membership.

I'll keep looking this week and might end up buying one off the internet and then bringing the little guy home in my friends until it arrives.

Take him everywhere and show him everything and if something seems to scare him, *you* as his leader, act unconcerned about it. Puppyhood is where they seem to develop fears for no good reason. Cesar the dog whisperer has it right- dogs follow a strong leader- be that leader!

And congratulations again, there is no better companion than a dog.
 
Uh, its awkward to explain by typing but unconcerned as if "its no big deal". If you go check stuff out, handle it, whatever and show its ok they can see that. Its more that they feel you are nervous first and they get nervous from sensing you.
ex- I have several friends that have dogs that have had scuffles with other dogs so now they get tense when their dog meets another on the trail. They always seem amazed that it doesnt happen when I dogsit for them. Thats because I dont let myself get stressed when it happens (and dont create situations where the dog feels obliged to put up a front/fight). Their dog sees that 'all is cool' and moves on no problem.
Puppies have weird fears- men with hats/beards, balloons, certain kinds of dogs, etc. Usually you can work through it the first time. If you wait until the fifth time, well maybe not! ;) My library is packed so I can't give you good dog training books right now. Download Cesar the macho mexican and watch him- he knows dogs inside out.
 
I brought Radar home this weekend and I'm very please with the little guy.

Here we are playing him out so he would sleep the 2 hour ride home.

He did better than expected in the vehicle and was very happy when he got to his new home. The weekend has gone pretty darn good I must say. For a 7 week old puppy he sure is smart and quick to adapt. He's starting to take to the house training but its slow.

Took him out on the leash for the first time and after a little resistance in the yard... he was great. Right on heel the entire time and only tried to take off on a scent a couple times but then right back. Tail waggin' the whole time. He's starting to play fetch already. Three or four retrieves and then he's tuckered out. He tries to point as well but that will come with time.
