Quality AR Suggestions

Colt uses parts that only work in Colts and their quality control as been pretty bad for last the decade or so. Colt just coasts on it's name. Only old guys who were issued Colts back in the 60's through 80's still believe that the Colt name is synonymous with "quality." Besides the company who makes "Colt Rifles" for the civilian market is actually not even the same Colt company that was around back in the day. Colts are like Jaguar cars. Some people buy them for the name, others because they don't know any better, but the gun--along with the car--is mostly an expensive piece of junk making it's living off of "remember when."

Bushmaster is the gold standard because they sell the most AR's and everyone pretty much uses them as a yardstick to compare how well or how poorly they are doing AR's. Not just 8 years ago nobody doubted that Bushmaster was "the best." Most of the companies you buy AR's from nowdays didn't exist 8 years ago. Bushmaster has been doing it for 30. Noveske is a custom AR assembler, not a stem to stern manufacturer. Noveske is really more of a custom shop and I don't actually consider Noveske to be a "Brand." They are the guys that I take my Harley Davidson to to have tricked out; savvy?

Edit: Keep in mind, my take on a "quality AR" is to get the best quality parts or assembed rifle from an actual manufacturer, at the best price. These are civilian sporting rifles we are talking about, not "top of the line" weapons of war or competition. The car analogy works best. I'm always trying to put together, or buy the best Corvette sports car that I can, not a Ferrari, because a good Corvette is more car all by itself than most people can really handle. Ferrari's are for professionals. The sad part about it all is that most Soldiers don't even get as nice a gun as you would get with a standard, new, Bushmaster; ain't that always the way for Soldiers though. The PMC's have it better, but that's a whole different story. They often get the Ferrari's but even then sometimes not. Believe me, any of you guys want a nice Corvette at a good price. That's what you REALLY want and need whether you realize it or not.

Exactly! Completely right on here i must say.

I find it amazing how so many people still buy into the "Colt" is the best AR in the world syndrome. I own a Bushmaster and have compared it to many other Ar's out there, and it is still one of the best out of the box rifles. I also own an MR223 and have worked extensively with many other brands as well.

The best advice I can give to a new "AR to be owner" is buy one that was recently made in the last 5 to 7 years, remember improvements are made from version to version, you can see the difference on the finishes from a Bushmaster of 10 years ago to one made today( I don't mean due to daily wear & tear). Any of these rifles mentioned are fine by all accounts, it really depends on your budget!

If you really want to get an AR that is more tailored to your specific requirements then there is plenty of options out there of these new company's that will meet your needs.

I've heard good things about Davis Defense, but I've never handled one. It would be cool to hear from someone who has.

I have only seen, and used their accessories. But I have little experience with them.

On a side not, AR's have been around for so long now i think most companies out there should be able to make a good rifle by now that will exceed all the requirements of the members on this board, and to the world!

I had a Dlask upper that had a Model 1 Sales barrel.

It did come with a FA BCG though. :)

I thought dlask manufactured their own barrels...

also looking at the "MODEL 1 SALES" websight all barrel assemblys are labeled "ER SHAW" barrels, so i take it model 1 sales barrels are ER shaw barrels?, and i was led to believe ER shaw barrels were'nt that bad...

Model 1 rifles, and their barrels, are better than Oly's. No they're not great, but they are fine for casual plinking, or a cheap self defense rifle. If you're the kind of guy who shoots 500rds. a year, then a Model 1 rifle will do you just fine. I wouldn't competition shoot with one, but I'd plink all day long with one. People who talk crap about them generally consider themselves "serious AR guys", that or they are just copying what somebody else said and are not applying their words to the practical reality of a sport shooter, and that's fine. But for most of you yahoo's, me included, there is nothing wrong with a Model 1 plinker. I'd certainly take a Model 1 over a Blue Star or Olympic if that's all I could afford and just really wanted an AR. So long as you avoid Blue Star's and Oly's like the plague you're never going to be too badly disappointed.
