Remmington R15

After you strip the camo finish, use some medium steel wool to roughen the finish.

Steel wool promotes rust. It will make stainless steel and aluminum rust. Other than wood working I can think of no application for steel wool. Scotch Brite is a better option, bead blasting is better.

He stated he does not have access to a sandblaster, and aluminum does not rust.

its called micro contamination. Steel particles get into the aluminum pores and then the steel rusts. Makes it look like the aluminum is rusting but its just the steel.

Walks like rust, quacks like rust and as it is rust it will make paint fail like rust. At least here on the wet coast it will.

Bugger I've been busy, to tell the truth I have yet to shoot it, and have not found suitable cheap optics to throw on it yet :(

After shooting C7 on the range the other week with that crap scope mount anything would be better. ;) (oh still managed to score marksman :) )

Some questions

I just bought an R15 yesterday, waiting for the ATT to come through. I hate the camo, so I'd love to know if there's any success in painting it. I'm also wondering if aftermarket AR style parts will fit, and if so, where can I buy them? I'd be afraid to strip the finish with chemicals until I was sure they won't damage anything. I was told by the salesperson that it's near impossible for them to get any AR style rifles because the supply is short from the states, he also said the same thing about kimber and springfield 1911's. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I'm sure I won't be dissapointed by the quality, it'll be my third Remington product and I've been satisfied so far.

I painted mine Desert tan. Degreased it with Isopropyl alcohol and painted right over the camo. Looks good and seems durable enough and hey if you get a scratch touch up is easy.

well got my cheap NcStar 4X scope and went shooting. Seems louder then a C7 could be that it has flash hider and its an 18" barrel.

I was using a bunch of handloads I just threw together from stuff I had on hand and they worked well enough. Rifle functions as it should but I must say having to use 5 rd mags sucks, hard (I did my C7 qual shoot thursday with full mags) :) And only having one mag really sucked even more. Well I've got 3 more on the way all 20 neutered to 5 rd mags.

Stupid rules. I remember buying 30rd metal mags because those original issue thermomold mags would fail and the feed lips break off and eject the entire content of the mag into the chamber only to be mashed by the bolt. Then when you ejected the mag the spring would shoot the mag out and more rounds would go flying all over. Ahhh the good old days.

Bet there are a few army guys out there still with a stash of metal mags in some old kit :runaway:

Ok so back to testing, 50 rounds, everything is working. Camo finish is taking a bit of a beating and I'm not going to baby it. Wear is noticeable under the charging handle, and some has chipped off on the rail, from putting on and off different scope rings.

Finally got it to the range. My first AR. 100 rounds through it. Had a freakin blast. my wife took some footage. After i got home and watched it every clip ended with me giggling like a school girl. Boy did i have fun.

I have always wondered why you guys go for these Remy's. For the same money or close to, you could have gotten a S&W MP15, or a Stag, or even go cheaper and get a Norc. I could see if you could hunt with it but obviously thats not guna happen.. So what am I missing?...... Especially Woodchopper who is guna completely refinish his anyway... whats so great about these Remy's...???

It's a Remington Baby!!!! I like the finish of the R-15 and MY R-25 (not others though seemed different somehow, more white). Don't know why people want to refinish them either. The finish wear is just love marks and adds character anyway. I can definitely see how the finish will go under the charging handle though, I took a nice stripe off mine when it still belonged to the store. Getting R-25 mags is a pain in the arse though. I would like to get an R-15 after I pickup my CZ858's.

There is no comparison between the R15, and Stag, or S&W. Maybe I got lucky, but the R-15 is a better made unit then any stag, or the one S&W I have seen.

When I bought my R-15 in November, I was assuming that I would want to swap the barrel for a 1 in 7, so I ordered a krieger. Now that I see the R15 shoot, I am not in a rush to swap the barrel.

well the do come in interesting calibers if you want them. They are well made but the finish is really silly looking.

Main selling point for me was the 18" barrel and mid lenght gas system. I don't want a M4 type short pencil thin barrel.

Paid $1300 for it to my door, price was good too

I only held this rifle a couple times at a few gun stores, and i I definitely like it. I also think the camo pattern is very good, I don't see the point of painting the rifle black, or any other color because of the camo pattern being a considered ugly.

I think that pattern works great, kinda reminds me of a combination of Cadpat,Multi cam, and vegatato. Along with the hunter camo mixed in their!
