Heya folks. I recently got my PAL and am supposed to go on my first moose hunt in Gaspésie later this year.

So I've been looking for a rifle.

I went ot the two gun stores in Montréal I can easily get to (Dante's and Sail/Baron downtown) to play with everything I could put my hands on before making any decisions. All my magazine reading and forum lurking/discussing has lead me to develop a fetish for the Remington 700 CDL and the Winchester Model 70, simply because stuff like Sakos and such are a hard thing to justify this early in my journey.

Sail/Baron has nothing in 30-06 or .308. Honest to the gods. I was there to-day. They had one rifle in .270, if I remember correctly and a wallful of .300 WSMs. I commented on the weirdness, and the guy behind the counter agreed. They also had no Model 70s, and apparently don't expect any to show up this year due to massive US sales. I don't know if that's true or not, but I *do* know that Dante's didn't have one either.

My plan is to pick up something second-hand, as I've only managed to scratch together just over a grand so far, and that has to cover gun, sope and the beginnings of the clothes and such I need.

I saw there was a Winny 70 in .308 for sale here at a very good price with a scope on, but since nobody in town's got one in stock, I have no idea how the gun feels. I'm also not certain that a .308 would do well on my first moose hunt: I'm just not yet skilled enough to say that my shot placement will be good enough for a kill rather than a wound -- though after a summer of practise, I might be singing a different song.

I know the Remmy 700 CDL was exactly as cool as I was expecting. I also tried out some Tikkas and Savages, as well as a camo synthetic-stocked 700 that I hated.

But Sail/Baron being out of any sort of non-magnum moose calibre, plus me not finding much in the way of affordable (for me) 30-06s equals a bit of frustration.

Anyone else had this much trouble spending money before?

I feel your pain, roadkill.
I'm no fan of 30-06 or Rem 700s but I'm having great difficulties deciding how I'm going to spend AUD$1500.
Like you, SAKOs, Steyrs and RWS Titans are too pricey.
Now I'm trying to decide between a Baikal MP-221 double in 45-70, a Ruger No1A in 7x57 or a Ruger No1H in 450/400 NE 3".
And despite encouragement from many quarters for all 3 of these I really don't feel any closer to a decision.
Who would've thought I'd EVER have trouble spending $1.5k on a gun! :(

Mailorder - Epps in Ontario is pretty good. They have a fair selection of used as well. And the EE here of course.

If the 700 seemed good to you, a win M70 probably would too. But it would be nice if you could actually handle it before you take the plunge.

I own a lot of high powers of different brands and I have never met one I can't shoot. They all pretty much feel the same to me. Buy what you want off EE and use it, if you like it keep it, if not, sell it after the hunt.

A poor shot with 308 or 30-06 is still a bad shot and probably will end with a lost moose either way. 308 is plenty for moose. Regardless of what you choose make sure you practice alot and pick a load that shoots well, with a decent bullet designed for big game. You can get a lot of advice here for suitable factory ammo, I use Winchester Silver tips in 180 gr

As a new moose hunter your biggest problem with shooting will be controlling your nerves, aka "buck fever". If you are comfortable with shooting your gun, you just have to remember to put the bullet where it counts. Good luck.

Welcome to the addiction, I wish I had the EE when I was starting out.:D

A good start would be the model 70 for $450, but the scope is likely a cheap one. So, I'd spend another $200 in the EE on a good 2-7x scope. That leaves you $350 for a good pair of boots, a warm jacket, and 6 boxes of ammo to practice with.

yeah, that's the one I was talking about. Seems like an almost unbelievable price, though I wouldn indeed change the scope. I guess I could always take the plunge, and if the rifle and I don't end up getting along, I can sell it next season without taking a big hit.

Maybe I'll drop him a line...

Tradex has some killer rifles for awesome prices, Anthony is a great guy, and you'd do no wrong buying from them. You could buy any of these hunting rifles and know you a gun that will last you your hunting days:

Mauser actions, CRF

Moose Getter 9000:

(Maybe a wee bit much for a first rifle :p )

Lots of 308's and 30.06's:

Buy one of these, a lot of ammo, and practice practice practice, no caliber is going to make up for poor shot placement.

Wow. You, sir, have excellent taste in guns. Those three are all very nice.

Well, I'm now waiting to hear back about three rifles: two in .308 and one in 30-06. If none of them work out, I'll definitely take a closer look at Trade Ex. I don't know why I didn't think of them. Hell, I think they're even local for me...

Buy one of these, a lot of ammo, and practice practice practice, no caliber is going to make up for poor shot placement.

Agreed.

Brother i urge you to check out the Kimber rifles, they use a mauser action and feel extremely natural in your hand, they run around a grand, but ive held alot of bolt actions and no action is as smooth or as solid as that mauser bolt, the 700 feels flimsy compared to it..the kimber rifle has, in my eyes achieved perfection

Keep an eye out in the EE, some decent deals on gently used 700s and Model 70s do pop up. The Model 700 CDL is a great rifle and you won't go wrong with either .30-06 or .308 for moose!

If your local shops aren't meeting your needs, start checking out the multitude of Canadian gun stores that have an on-line presence. It also pays to shop around!

Check out the CGN dealers links at the top of each page, but you don't have to limit yourself to them! I just picked up a NIB Remington 700 LTR last month from a shop out in Maple Ridge, BC...shipped clear across the country to me in Newfoundland!

Well, I fired a PM to the guy with the M70 .308 for sale a couple of days ago, and I'm waiting to hear back. I've also got some nice PMs from guys with guns they'd sell if it falls through. I've been scouring the buy and sells at three forums for a couple of weeks now, so it'll be nice to get something. I'm not really in a hurry, but I *do* want to pend the summer practising and getting my skills up to speed.

Those BRNOs look really nice. Looks like it's a CZ brand, but bolt-action rifles didn't show up anywhere on the CZ BRNO site. Did it used to be an independent brand?

X-Man, do you remember what the store was or how you found it?

Brno used to be a separate company (as far as I know), there isn't a lot of info on Brno's, other than there great rifles, CZ's are very similar, I prefer the Brno's. The ones with the coveted peep sights are relatively rare, and hard to find. I have 5 Brno's, each one is very accurate, well built, and a great looking gun. I traded both my Model 70's for Brno's, just personal preference.

I got my first rifle from tradeex and it's awesome. Great service from Anthony as well. I was on a limited budget and didn't quite fancy synthetic stocks...

My criterias were:
- Wooden stock
- 30-06 (I wanted to be able to buy ammo pretty much anywhere and have a flexible caliber)
- mauser action
- With weaver bases

Got all that for 350$
