Model 12 Winchester shotguns - value?

I know an old guy looking at getting rid of a collection, need some idea of values, and collect ability. Sorry no photos, but believe they are in excellent condition, the one firearm I am buying has been well looked after,

Model 12 Winchester shotguns in various gauges:

2x12 gauges one only proof-fired
20 gauge
16 gauge
Model 42 .410

Field grade 12 gauges, that is with full choke and plain barrels go for a couple hundred dollars if in fair to good condition. The same new in box might fetch 800 bucks or more.

The sub gauges go for much more with exception to 16's which are just becoming more sought after. A excellent condition 20 on the American market would sell for 7-800 dollars, far less in Canada. Again if these had some special characteristics such as factory vented or solid ribs, modified or IC, skeet, etc and in good condition with 90 percent or better bluing then a grand is possible should the right seller come along. This is all providing the shotguns have not been monkeyed with.

A M42 in good condition will be worth at least a grand and probably two or more as these are very highly sought after, again more so in the U.S. I would get a broker and look to the Stated to sell this one.

The last M12 I purchased a few years back was a 12 gauge M12 Trap manufactured in 1963, full choke, factory three pin vented rib, 98 percent bluing, all original with one owner, bill of sale and original box. I paid 1000 bucks which I feel was a high but fair price.

My advise would be to get these guns appraised by a qualified person, find a broker and sell them on the U.S. market. For interest sake check out "Dave Riffles Gun Page".
 
Actually the Model 1912 20ga, with the 2 9/16'' chamber are of a little less value . The model 42 -410 if plain bbl and 90% condition $900.00 -$1400.00 cnd. 20ga. field grade $400.00 - $600.00 16ga. $300.00- $400.00 As for selling them on the u.s side you will only get wholesale price for them the u.s market is soft at this time you can not value these firearms by U.s retail sites as many of those guns stay listed for long periods of times also by the time everyone takes there cut of the sale you will be no further ahead and a lot of hassle .

I see model 12's in "very good condition" in 20 & 16ga's averaged priced at $599 (16) 699 (20) on CDN dealer sites. Most have been sold very quickly and a few are still around after a year. The prices above are good advice if you want to flip them.

Re pricing of model 12's this is a list of model 12's I have purchased in the last couple of years in the Canadian market Gun shops and Gun shows, 1912 -20ga. circa 1914 Saskatoon Gun Show $225. Senlac Gun Show 20ga. 1949-28''mod. $400. Regina Gun Show 20ga.1954 $300. and a 3'' Solid rib 12ga- $375. . Concort Gun Show 16ga. $200. Gun Shop . P.A. sask 16ga. Solid Rib.$300 12ga. Saskatoon Gun Shop.12ga. Solid Rib. $225 Saskatoon Gun Show 3'' Vent Bib $150. All these guns sat on racks and tables that gun enthusiasts walk by time and time a gain the $ 150 -3'' a fellow walked around a gun show all afternoon from dealer to dealer and no one would give him a $150.for it My point is unless the buyer has a relation ship with model 12's most other guys don't really care about them as for the over priced ones I have be in gun shops in 3to4yr. spans and seen the same ones sitting there so that is not an indication of value.

True but once again location dictates the value. Plenty of M12's in Western Canada with lot's of hard miles on them. These are well worn and used for a lifetime by a generation of hunters that are now mostly too old to hunt. Dollar value of these is small and these are worth much more if parted out and sold in this manner. Still any M12 with any special characteristics in excellent to mint condition that has NOT been "monkeyed" with will generate a fair bit of interest from a very select group... as there are just so few of these left. Once again...location,location,... location!
 
What the hell are you talking about how can generalize on condition and location of a shotgun when you have never seen it I own 36 models 12's and everyone is mechanically sound and most are cosmically excellent . That is ridicules statement !

Dave Riffles Gun Page...Google it please. Southern Florida Prices. While your at it, pick me up a 28 Gauge M12 for 400 bucks in Saskatchewan;). Sorry Stuff, don't mean to be sarcastic but if you do own some thirty something minty M12's I would bet my first born that your collection would be worth three times more in the US than it's worth in prairie Canada.
 
I regualry see field guns for about $175 to $225.
The last one I saw was $175.
I have four, two goodtogo and two parts guns, and like them, but they are not as desirable as wingmasters these days - I'm talking about a field gun, NOT a collector.
I have one with a factory installed simmons rib and cutts compensator, that I would not get the price of a new Wingmaster for.

Yes it would be worth that in the u.s but yes toto we are not in Kansas and we can not sell our model 12's in the u.s and even at that I have watched all kinds of sites in the u.s and many of those guns sit for sale for yrs. Also if you look at different sites prices very greatly as far as your comment about the 28ga just about any idiot in the gun world knows that is the holy grail of model 12's and maybe shot guns in general . Example if you go to Williams Gun sight and look at there prices they will be 20%-30% less than Ca bell's . Besides that there only a small percentage of cndn's who value High grade Firearms the way the u.s guys do Cnds. are into more of a utility grade mind set every now and then someone stumbles on to something and they think they have won the lottery .I have worked in Gun Shops and sporting Goods stores for thirty yrs and see this every day .Before steel shot came about you could get 40=50% more for a standard grade model 12 in this country hence the utility of a hunting gun .

Stuff is only worth 3 times more if some one's willing to pay.
There any number of gun shops in the USA that are holding on to what they perceive to be high value model 12's, Cabelas gun room, Steve Barrett Fine guns. Priced very high and are for sale for many months.

I have bought a number of guns on our forum from fellows that think they know what " MINTY " is. They can spell it and that is about all. FS
 
I agree with Fassteel about the condition I have put this out there before I have a 1958 Winchester Model 12 WS1 Deluxe Skeet Gun with Solid Rib Beautiful Shotgun this Gun prices out all over the U.S for $2500.00 u.s . Anyone can buy this Gun from me for $1200.00 cnd, no takers its an investment grade gun like I said before cnd. gun people in general are not of that mind set if they can;t shoot there SHOTTY' what ever the hell a SHOTTY is they don't get it.
 
Boy, some guys are really touchy about model 12s, they usually sit on the shelf for along time at the places that I hang out. Same guy ends up buying them, he may need counselling!
 
Struff you have a fine 12 for sale there. I also can't agree more that trying to get fair market value up here in Prairie Canada will be next to impossible. Your trying to sell a Porche in pickup truck country!

I own a 1950 M12 16 gauge skeet/Win. skeet Choke/26 inch matted rib in truly near mint condition. I know should I ever think of parting with it I will most likely never get what I payed for it in Canada.

As for condition... I see every year at various gun shows rural dealers showing up with field grade well worn "one step up from a canoe paddle" M12's with pipe dream 400 dollar price tags on em!

Again this all goes location which was deemed as a stupid comment. Selling guns state side is difficult to say the least. I sold most of my handgun collection state side through a friend/ broker back in 2002-03. His cut was 10 percent..and I did well selling at that time in the US... what was almost useless in Canada. I know today the Americans have gone completely mad with this homeland security crap and selling a firearm there as an alien would likely be even more difficult that only 5 years ago

Short of it here, if ya have some TRULY special firearm... one can either dump it here for a loss in cheap old Canada...or sit on it and wait for the right buyer. Ya might sit for a long time though!
 
!6ga Solid Rib skeet now I'm envious I'm trying to find a 16 with solid rib modified or 12ga solid rib modified I did pick up a model 42 with a modified choke for what I believe was a good price but when i tell people what i paid for a 410 pump they think I'm nutz. !6ga Skeet there can't be many of those out there .
 
Sruff55 some people think that the first offering of the Win Mod 12 in 20 guage in 2&1/2 is the grail,others think the Win Mod 1894 originaly introduced in 38-55 is the grail. Some think the Lugar in 30 lugar is the grail others in nine mil,others think the 45/70 was the original military round,while we all know the 50/70 was it!

Think what you want but look at any Blue Book and the Win Mod 1912 in 2&1/2 will bring more cash than the rest!

Model 12s, etc.

I agree with the previous poster about Cdn. prices being out of step with the inflated prices being sought South of the Border.

Simply put, Canadians do not revere firearms as do Americans, and all prices are universally lower here than State side. Case in point, I recently picked up an EXCELLENT Model 21 for less than $3K Cdn.. That is a $6K USD firearm, no debate.

Buy what you like, and use them. Don't expect to profit.
