long range competion/demo

Hi moeben,this past weekend, we had two days of long range shooting (800m and 900m) at CFB Gagetown.

This coming Sunday 14-June, there will be a 300m match fired at CFB Gagetown. Once a year we hold an "ISSF-style" match, and this is it. It consists of unlimited sighters, and sixty shots to score. Each shot can score up to 10 points (the ten ring is 100mm in diameter, which is certainly hittable at 300m, but it is decently challenging).

Shooting at 300m is a great way to "get your feet wet" and try it out. The rest of our shooting dates and events are listed at http://rnbra.ca/Full Bore_schedule.htm.

What time is the match and where exactly is the range. I am not sure if I can make it but I am sure going to try. I am not ready to compete yet but I would like to observe and learn.

The match starts at 9am (as in, shooting starts then - so try to be on the range by 8:30am to register, help set up, etc).

If you have a rifle that shoots well, and you would like to shoot it, then you should bring it and give it a try. Even if you're not "ready to compete", if you are ready to shoot it, you should. We like having new shooters, and we try to take care of them and make sure they have a nice day. Anyhow, you decide if you want to shoot or just look and see what we do.

I'm at most matches, but I won't be at the one this Sunday due to previous commitments. If you think you will be going, please send me a private message, and I'll try to arrange for someone to act as your "buddy" for the day and show you everything.

CFB Gagetown is in Oromocto. Here are the directions to the range:

Enter the main gate of CFB Gagetown.

Drive (~1km?) until you get to the base fire station, turn right there.

Drive (~1km) until you get to a gate across the road. This is Range
Control. Pull into the parking lot there and go into the building.
Tell them you'd like to go to "Batouche Range"; put your name on our
list or fill out a form (whatever they have you do).

Then, drive to the gate. Stop and tell the Commissionaire there that
you are going to Batouche, and he'll let you in. As soon as you are in,
turn left and drive on the dirt road.

After 4.3km you'll cross over the divided highway. Then turn sharp
right, onto "Maidstone".

Drive 7.8km; Batouche Range will be on the left. There is no sign for
it, but there ought to be a red flag flying, and a gate made from a
couple of Bailey bridge sections. (On the right hand side of the road
is a sign for "Blackdown Park", or something like that - the cadet camp.

Thanks for your offer, I will not be able to make it this weekend and I will be away after that until the first part of July. I see there is a meet on July the 11th. If your offer is still open I would like to plan on being there. I will bring my new toy it is a Savage 12 LPV in 22-250 with a 1 in 9 twist barrel. If it works for you I will meet you there.
 
Hi moeben (and also anyone else similarly interested in NB fullbore shooting),

11-12 July is our "Annual Prize Meet", i.e. our provincial championships. It is a big and busy match, with everybody busy running the match well, and trying to shoot as best as they possibly can. So it is not the best one to come out and shoot for the first time, you won't get nearly the time, attention and patience that you would at any other match.

Having said that, you are definitely welcome to come out and see what one of our big matches looks like. And if you do want to shoot at least some of it, it would be possible, if you make arrangements with me ahead of time, so we can discuss how things run, what you need to do ahead of time to prepare yourself and your gear, etc.

Not (yet) on the calendar, there will likely be a 300m event at St. Antoine (half an hour north of Moncton) Sun-19-July, that would be a great first time shooting experience. It will likely be run as a training session for coaches; so you as a shooter would be guided in what to do, and have a lot of things taken care of.
 
That sounds like a good chance to just observe on the 11th. July 19 will not be possible to participate but I am sure I will get a chance for that come right time. I will be in touch.

If you are back in NB in time, the match on July 4 will be a very relaxed affair. It's basically a practice match, and I can help you along. Let me know if you are interested. The 300m match at St. Antoine will also be a great intro, as Daniel has said.
 
Hi Guys
Thanks much for your interest and offers. I will be away until July 6th, and I have to be in Ontario again from July 18 to the 26th. If it would be possible I would like to attend and just observe on July 11th. After the 26th the rest of the summer is going to be fairly open. I see by the schedule that there are matches in PEI and NS also. Do you guys attend these?

Moe, of course you can come visit our match on the 11th (and the 12th too). Let me know ahead of time, if you can. We can talk on the phone about it if you want.

Our schedule lists the major out of province matches, e.g. their provincial championships, inter-provincial team matches, etc. Shooters from all three Maritime provinces attend matches in neighbouring provinces.

There is a big empty block in our provincial fullbore calendars on 14-22 August, because this is when the national matches are fired in Ottawa.

There is a major regional match (the Atlantic Championships) held on the Labour Day weekend, 2.5 days of shooting. It rotates among the provinces, this year it is in NB.
