What make and model of sidearm do the RCMP carry? I have a friend that is looking to try and join the RCMP and he would like to practice with the same type of handgun that they currently use at the training Depot in Regina.

S&W 5946, it is prohibited...he cannot get one unless he has a 12-6. Any semi is good to practice with. As long as he can hit a target now they will teach him what he needs to know.

My apologies, I was recently at a regimental shoot, and a member was using his M&P 40. I assumed it was his issued weapon. Must have been his own. I will be shooting with him next week and will seek proper clarification. We only had revolvers in my time!!!

No apologies necessary. This has come up quite a few times on here. There is an RCMP firearms instructor on here who has confirmed the type of pistols they use now. Apparently the 5946 will be around for a while.

Here is a link to the thread where the current RCMP pistol was discussed at length.

A word to the wise, if your bud wants to get in to the RCMP.
Leave the firearms until after grad. They shoot enough to be marksman.

They used to shoot enough to be marksmen. I work for a guy who went through depot about 3 years ago and yes, they are marksmen when they leave depot, but they don't get enough to practice with to maintain really. That and with the push to get more students through depot, there is less range time availible per student according to a couple of guys I talked to who went through not that long ago.

In your free time on base the range is open for use and when you become a member, I know a few, you go to the range at your local home town or when you are in Regina on course. They don't force it down your throat as much during training like they used to but the opportunity is there if you want it. I worked at depot for a couple years and my father retired from 18 years there a few years ago. Depot is what you make of it. My friends and I, when we go to the range it is always a day trip lasting 5 hours, usually.

What's the legal version of the 5946 called? Is it prohibited because of the barrel length? Is there an S&W that has a longer barrel that could be close enough for practicing with that my friend could legally purchase?

Thanks for your input.

Questar was selling them a while back with the extended barrel. The main problem with the RCMP issued ones is the trigger. 12-14 pounds Double action only. The first target pistol I shot after learning on this, made me look good. It was a real joy to shoot a target pistol compared to the duty pistol.

When I went through Depot, you did shoot a lot. But then again we also shot the rifles, which they unfortunately don't do anymore.

So they are for sure 9mm? I thought someone told me they were shooting .40 S&W now but I guess I was misinformed by someone else who was misinformed.

What would be a good pistol to practice on? A Glock? Something DAO for sure with a similar weight trigger pull.

Any advice?

Yup 9mm for sure and the glock handles nothing like the S&W. Don't worry about practicing as much as making sure you are in very good shape and focused on the training. Also, going in green on firearms and shooting is better in my opinion so the instructors don't have to break any bad habits you may have developed.

yes the RCMP carry 9mm S&W 5946's Those with small hands can request a 3913.. But the folks at depot will do what they can to have you shoot the full sized one...

I believe the FRT picture for a 5946 is the RCMP marked one.. (love that pony) I know that there are a couple in private hands but not many...

Most police in Canada are not trained to shoot well.. They are taught to talk to people... They are taught to use any other method then to draw their sidearm.. There is little/no encouragement to have them shoot outside of their qualifications and their qualifications are pretty much a joke to most of us competitive shooters and even then, some fail that...
