Question about dust cover on 1911's

How common is it for the dust cover (I am assuming that is what it's called - the very forward tip of the frame) on a forged 1911 frame to be a hair thicker on one side than the other? I realize that this is not a crucial area, therefore the attention to machining may not be as precise, but I am just curious. Is this anything to worry about or avoid? I mean, the dust cover on Glocks always has that upwards bend to it and I have been told that is normal and of no consequence, so I imagine the same would apply to this scenario.

Some of the 1911's I have seen in the past while have this.

What would you say is the average or standard thickness of the dust cover's side walls at the very forward edge on a forged 1911 frame?

Thanks!

Both of my 1911's have uneven wear on the right hand side dust cover. I'm not sure if it's a thickness or fitment issue, but it doesn't bother me all that much. The wear is just only slight.

I don't think it's anything to worry about.
On a Norinco I'd expect it....on a more expensive 1911 I'd expect better finish.

My Norinco's are a little rough around the dust cover but it would not be too hard to even it out with a bit of file and stone work.

I find the Norinco's are project grade and I expect to do some de-tuning of sharp deges and blending of metal as well as re-finishing or touch up blueing.

How thin would you say is too thin for the sides of the dust cover? It's hard to tell on them if one side is too thick, or if the other is too thin. Too thin would bug me I think.

Anyone willing to measure the sides of their dust cover with their trusty Cambodian Tire digital calipers? :D

you stopped worrying about the thickness of glock breechface? :D

Nope. That still bugs me lol

I saw this on a few old 1911's actually, none of recent manufacture. I checked and there is only a hair's difference on my Norc, but my dad may be picking up a 1911 in the near future (probably an older one), and I just want to know what to look/watch out for.

On an irritating side note...I don't know why the 1911 doesn't fit my hands well. I thought it was THE gun for people with small mits. Perhaps without the safety it would be different, but the only way I can get a good high grip on a 1911 is by putting my thump on top of the safety for leverage, which I personally find is really uncomfortable and unnatural, and my thumb and web get really sore quick, and then half the time I am not pressing the grip safety in enough :(

Anyways, can anyone else chime in on how common this is with 1911's, especially the older (wartime possibly?) colt GI models?

Thanks

Would anyone be willing to post pics of how thick their dust cover is on their 1911?

I will try to get a hold of a camera to post pics of the norc.
