Information on EAL 303

Could some one help me to find out some information on a firearm that i aquired yesterday. Its a EAL 303 -SER.666 .The gun is in mint condition as it was sitting in an attic for the past 30 years+ .I can only find some info on the web . Is gun rare, how much is is worth or is it another enfield 303.

A few milsurp folks here on CGN know quite a bit more then I do, hopefully they'll drop by. It's not as common as the typical sporterized LE found in Canada, so yes it's worth a bit more of course...

Terry- The EAL rifle is an interesting, worthwhile, Canadian made Enfield rifle. We'd love to see some clear pics of yours. With them we can tell you how original it is.

I also had a 3 digit s/n EAL.

See, I knew that at the mention of these three letters, E, A, and L, Cantom would come out of its favorite lurking spot and be vocal ;)
 
There are 2 models....civilian and military. Civilian has the rear battle sight and a 10 shot magazine whereas the military has a leaf sight on the barrel knox and a 5 shot magazine. There a small varations throughout the serial number range. Condition is so important on putting a price on these. There are a lot more civilian models than military therefore the military is of higher value. If you have the military scoped model, then you've got a rare bird. Post a picture or 2 or email me and I'll give you my opinion. I'm well versued in the EAL's

Based on the 4 digit s/n messaged to me I'm 99.9% sure it's a normal civilian style EAL with the 200/400 flip sight at the rear of the receiver. Should get pics in a few days.
I think the military style with barrel mounted flip sight started up above the 4000 s/n mark somewhere.
 
Interesting point about Terry's new EAL, unlike any other that I've seen, it's marked CAL. (Canadian Arsenals Limited)
Standard looking "Civilian" model. S/N in the 2### range. Note standard Jostams pad, 10 rd magazine and no trigger guard loop.

Ah good question, I suspect that the militry version was set up for the airforce as a survival rifle and they decided that a civilain type rear sight mounted on teh barrel was superior for this application.

Airforce go figure :p

Any serial number rifle past about 4000 I've seen is the military configuration. I really wish I knew if any of them were sold to civilians as well?

Has anyone else ever seen one with that CAL marking on it?
 
"CAL" on the sidewall after "303" means calibre. Used after 2449 (?). Most military ones are 55XX to 69XX. I have seen a couple in the high 4### serial range. Note the barrel knox is stamped "CA". Is the barrel 2 or 5 groove? 2 groove not very common.

I've had a look and find RGG7 is correct. My military style EAL has CAL on it too and it's obviously refering to calibre after .303. I guess it's not Canadian Arsenals Limited as I hoped...:( Note the nice CA on the loopless trigger guard...also note that this rifle does not have CA on the barrel knox near the rear sight.

Here's a couple of pics of a buddy of mine's military style EAL with a s/n just over 5000.
His also doesn't have CA on the knox form and does have CAL after .303 as well. Unlike mine, his has the correct original profile 5 rd mag.

CANTOM....you trigger guard is from a CNo7 (no loop)...5 shot mag is a commerical Parker Hale. Barrel should be marked although it looks highly polished...may have been revlued and polished off. Nice rifle.

But, that is one of the earmarks of EAL rifles...no loop. We see some that do but most don't. I suspect they were made for the EAL production run.

Note in the second post that is a different rifle, mine is high 4###, his is low 5###, neither of them has CA on the barrel.

I know what you mean about highly polished...all of the EAL's I've handled that appeared unissued or little used had a very nice, glossy blue finish on them.
