What do you use to get rid of the ugly black paint?

I believe it's regular old Permatex gasket remover. The magical ingredient is methylene chloride.

I used a big brass wire wheel on a drill, and then used a buffing wheel on my bench grinder with the grey buffing compound and away she goes.

Thanks for the info, I got the same Permatex from CTire, I'll need the brass whire weel then.

i got the paint off with some paint remover i found in my late grandfathers garage. worked great. now i knida wish i had just brushed it on as i was gonna pour it back in the jug from the container i was soaking the stuff in but the paint just melted off. called circa 1850 heavy body paint remover. don't know if you can still even buy it. anyway what do you guys mean by a buffing wheel? you can buy them for a grinder and they're called that? also what kind of buffing compound? thanks. just need to make it shiny.

i prefer to use a steel wire wheel brush followed by a copper wire wheel brush cos i dont like mine too shiny .

I used G96 on a rag, then scraped it with my finger nail and it came right off. Also the cold blue paste makes it look much better once polished.

i bought some mibro polishing compound and a cotton wheel for a drill and this compound is rock hard. is it defective or it is supposed to be like this. kinda hard to apply besides heating it up but than it almost instantly hardens again
