I am looking to buy a World War 2 vintage, dated, stamped milsurp.

I would be interested in a Nazi marked, 98k with WW2 dates.
I would also be interested in a Endfield No4 MK1.

What should I expect to pay and what should I look for. Also, where should I look.

Well I know that P&S Guns and Militaria has some K98k. I got mine from them at a decent price. AFAIK they are all RC, i.e. force matched serials and such, but all of the Waffenamts were intact with no defacing (plus the rifle shoots like a dream).

Also, Mosin Nagants are great bang for the buck and you can still find surplus ammo for them.

I just took a peek.

Most of their rifles do not have the Swastika markings. I would be looking for one with intact Swastika and WW2 date coded.

How much would I be looking to pay and where should I look? I have looked in the EE and cant seem to find any. :(

WW2 original k98's are well over a grand...enfields are quite a bit cheaper. Best bet is a norweigian rifle from p&s they are 30-06 but the swasticas are usually intact and the rifles are closer to original then any russian capture

Can't remember, but most no4's seem to be around $350-$500 depending on condition.

Actual unmessed with WW2 mausers are $1000+
A russian capture with WW2 markings and plenty of eagles is about $375-$450. Depending on where you are you should go check one out in person. You'll see the russians usually didn't work hard at removing the eagles.

Hmm, sorry about that then. I got mine from him a few months ago (DOT 1944) with all the Eagles and Swastikas intact. He must be running low :)

Looks like a Russian capture 98 Mauser is right up your alley without breaking the bank.... ;)

NAA.

(PS1438)- Mauser 98K, cal. 8x57 mm, made by S/42 1936, Flat buttplate, machined triggerguard, laminated stock, machined middle band, solid front band, Intact Waffenants. These are Russian captured rifles, refinished in Russian arsenals. Some parts may be electro penciled to match receiver. No cleaning rods or lock screws, Overall very good condition, $375.00 Can + shipping. (Canadian F.A.C. or P.A.L. required)

He sent me this when I just emailed him

Does this sounds like it has intact Swastikas and eagles and stuff?

I am not fgood with the terminology since this will be my first 'real' milsurp.

u wanna sell it...?;)

Haha, I could never part with it now. I've just got it all cleaned up and the missing parts installed! (Darn Russians and pulling off all the things they deemed as "unnecessary").

It looks like your best bet would be to lurk the EE for awhile, and pounce when you see one pop up. I can't think of anywhere else you could get one aside from going from gunshop to gunshop (even then you'll likely only find bubba'd mausers).

The best way would be to ask him. I know that he is a straight shooter and won't try to sugarcoat anything. He helped me pick out mine. It does say "Intact Waffenants" which are the Eagle markings, and it does not say that the Swastikas are peened or defaced like all of the other listings do.

I am ready to send him money.

Wish he would email me back.

Will this one be missing parts? If yours was I wonder if this one will....

To be honest you should research it a bit more. Ask for some photos if you havn't already, make sure its the rifle that you want. All Russian captures are missing the cleaning rod, lock screws, and front sight hood (if the rifle had one to begin with). You can buy these parts both original off of ebay or reproduced from these guys, among many others:

www.landser.com

These parts are not necessary to the function of the rifle (except maybe the lock screws), but do add some more aesthetic appeal to it.

I just want to add a cool WW2 milsurp to the collection. I want the dates on it and markings so when I show it off to friends they go 'ooh...ahhh'.

I dont really care if it is perfect but I definately want pre 1945 dates and Nazi markings (if I go with the 98k).

The Endfields he has for 350 bucks seem nice though if I cant find a suitable Mauser 98k.

Hey, thats one of the (many) awesome things about owning a milsurp, the "cool" factor. Just remember that it will not be in brand new condition, these rifles likely saw service :)

Good luck with whichever rifle you decide to go with! I know that I'm very happy with my 2 milsurps.

He just emailed me back and told me he has a couple Norweigan rifles with intact swastikas but none of the other ones. The Norwegan ones are rebarrelled and shoot 30-06.

He also has the 1936 model russian one but that one wont have swastikas because it is pre 1939.

Which of these is more desirable?

Personally, if caliber isn't a big deal to you, I would go with the Norwegian ones. Their refurb process was less invasive than the Russian method and the Norwegian K98's will be closer to original, parts and finish wise. (well, besides the way the Norwegians milled off part of the reciever anyway).

Russian capture K98's are a mix of parts from several different rifles after their refurbishment so their collectibility is debatable. They are great shooters however if you get one with a decent bore.
