hi all:
i've got a bunch of 140-145 grain lead wadcutter bullets and i need a recipe for .38,.38+p or .357.(not hollow point/bullet-it's a solid lead "tube")
anyone got a load using titegroup or universal?
thanks in advance...

Your best bet is to look up the Hodgdon website and work from thier data.

If you really want to load hotter than plain jane .38 spec, you may want to go with an even slower powder than Universal. Trying to load too hot with a faster powder can be scary.

hi canuck:
i've got 3 books(lee, speer and hornady) and checked the hornady site.
the closest is 148 gr. hollow bullet wadcutter.if i go with this should i add a grain to the load in .38 spl. since the bullet is 142-143 gr.?(6 grains lighter than their wadcutter load)
any good reloading mags out there?i know higginson was using a magazine to look up some loads fo me...

i did check that site and another one several times.
the only 140 grain bullet is their xtp(hollow point full copper jacket).

135 grain is for lead round nose not wadcutter.i don't think i can use this data because of the different shape of the bullet.

148 gr. is the closest wadcutter load but about 3-8 gr. too heavy...

The problem with guestimating wadcutter loads based on published data for different bullets isn't so much the shape as the fact that wadcutters are seated much deeper than regular bullets (flush with the case mouth).

I bought a bunch of 105gr. WCs and had a helluva time finding loads for it. My advice is to take all the approximate data you can find (140gr. XTP, 135gr. LRN and 148 gr. WC), crunch'em together and determine what is likely to be a good starting point. That's what I did, worked fine.

There is a lot more data for Hodgdons than what appears on the website. You can actually call the customer service number and ask to speak to the ballisticians in the lab. They can provide you with just about any load you need or at least start you off. They can even email you their recipe data which is not published but is available only on request. Great bunch of guys to chat with.
Good luck

6 gr of bullet weight is nothing, especially lighter than listed bullets. Use the 148 data and leave it at that.

Just use the 148gr data. 3.3gr Titegroup on Hodgdon's site. If you are using a lee powder measure, the smallest disc throws a 3.5gr load which is fine for the wimpy wadcutters.
