LMT Compliant Defender - Ease of De-Complying It?

I am thinking about purchasing the LMT Compliant Defender Standard Model 16 (LMT Item# COMP16) and would like information on "de-complying" it (my word), as the complaint features are simply intended to ease US exportation and have no basis in Canadian policies.

For those that don't know how this model differs from standard LMT guns, it features: a 16" barrel with a so-called "clean muzzle" (no flash hider or even threads) and a fixed, non-collapsing SOPMOD buttstock assembly.

My question is: how easy and costly is it to undo these features? Can any qualified smithy thread the barrel and install an A2/aftermarket flash hider? Without knowing exactly how it differs from a standard SOPMOD buttstock assy, do you think it would be possible to return the functionality of the collapsible stock and if not I guess it could just be swapped out.

Thanks.

There are still LMT models with collapsible stocks and flash hiders in stock with various dealers and for sale in the EE. Why buy a neutered AR and spend extra to make those mods you mentioned?

I love this term "neutered" that's getting thrown around relating to AR's. When I think of neutered, I think of having it's balls cut off, obviously. Well that is not the case, as I think the "balls" of the AR is the ammunition. If anything, ALL magazine fed firearms in Canada are neutered because of the magazine restrictions.

As someone else said, I like the look without the flash hider better as well. I am not too concerned about the paper target knowing where I am shooting at it from, which odds are, I am directly in front of it anyway. I would prefer the stock to work though, so it could be adjusted to me, then I couldn't care at all after that if it ever moves again, perhaps that's something to consider.

Thank you for all the replies, gentlemen. You are quick!

Paulinski,
10-4 on Casey. That is actually who I had in mind, but I nevertheless appreciate the recommendation.

RedDuc,
Thx for your insight and information. I had nvr noticed that the release lever was missing in the photos I'd looked at.

Best regards,

Please point out where.

Blue Line has some 10.5" I think. (maybe at 10.5" you would want a FH)
Questar has a 16" MRP with a threaded barrel and FIXED stock.
Maybe some others on the EE.

Oh, and WRT flash hiders: Is there any competitive advantage to having them, say in a 3 gun or service rifle event?

Also with the fixed SOPMOD stock the utility of accessing the "battery" compartment is "neutered" ;) since you have to remove the buttstock to twist the tubes out. You'll need an Alan key... (maybe tuck one in the ergo grip:cool:)

While you are waiting to have the barrel smithed(for an extra 200.00 )you will probably see an new unfired 16" one come up on the exchange for alot less.Patient you must be,young grasshopper.

Or as mentioned, get a 10.5 " lmt from blueline
I think a 10.5" non compliant model is infinitely more desirable than a neutered 16" ..... but what do i know

We can thread the barrel for you (at time of purchase)... charge is $75.00

We also have several choices for muzzle device (A2 Flash Hiders, Tactical Comps and the PWS FSC556 which is very hard to beat :)).

As for the stock... you would need to switch the extension tube (we are currently sold out of Mil-Spec 6 position tubes but expect to get more). You would also need to modify the Stock... but it can be done. The other alternative is to simply replace the stock/extension tube with a new adjustable/telescopic stock kit... those start at $89.99 complete for a Commercial version.

Not sure why someone posted something about not being able to access the battery compartments on the fixed stock version... makes no sense to me as there is no problem accessing the battery compartments??? They are tight (waterproof seal) but can be twisted off while installed.

The fixed stock actually works really well and is perfect setting for the majority of people. If you need an adjustable and plan to change lengths all the time then that's one thing... but if you set it and forget it then the fixed length actually works really well without doing anything.

As for the muzzle... the target crown muzzle is very nice and shoots very well. Threading isn't a problem if that's what you want... but most people that worry about it are just trying to follow what the "crowd" is telling them. It may look cool but unless you're going to install a high end compensator of some type there's no good reason to thread it and install a base flash hider... it's not like you need to hide your flash at the shooting range.
