I just aquired a Cooey/Winchester model 64. It came in pieces, and I am trying to put it back together. There are 2 L shaped pieces, one is a thin strip/spring type that looks like the mag release, and one is a solid L shaped bar. Both have 2 screw holes and look like they attach through the trigger block into the receiver. I cannot for the life of me reassemble them in some way that makes sense to hold the magazine in. I can't find a manual online that references this old model.

Help please!

I haven't viewed it myself(dial up), so sorry if it's no help.

The parts you have ARE for the first model 64, not the later types. The mag for this gun should be a plastic one with a slot in the back for the heavier piece of steel to go through, the lighter one is, as you guessed, the mag catch. Both are held to the reciever, heavier one close to the reciever, with 2 philips machine screws.
Later 64's came with metal mags and metal mag housings. You can change out the parts you have for the newer type, this will allow you to use readily available Savage 64 mags and the prior Cooey 64 b mags. You should be able to get the mag housings at "Western Gun Parts" in Edmonton.

And you never will. This is the retaining spring and reciever assembly for Cooeys infamous plastic mag. If you do NOT have a clip for it, chances are extremly good that you never will. Hopefully savage will sell you a new clip and reciever assembly. The holes will line up becuase it was a common footprint.

They look like the mag guide and mag catch.

I've got it all back together and it seems that I was sent the wrong mag for the gun, looks like I need to change the magwell or find some old mags!

Thanks guys!

Good luck on finding the plastic mags. Very few and far between. Usually sold with the complete gun or just worn and cracked. I have been looking for over 2 years. Much cheaper to get the metal replacements.
