Winchester Survival Shotgun

His barrel is 18" and his over all length is about 26 1/2"

The Law puts a limit on size and he is just at/ above that limit.

Even if your intent is not defense, a few slugs in the pack could be a very wise move. Again good job, given the very low cost of such a project I may attempt something similar.

I have a 20 guage tamer and the recoil is stout-but a .410 might make for a nice little close range small game/grouse gun with the cut down stock.I got the 20 because I could shoot slugs if I chanced upon a deer while out walking for a grouse.

Ya I looked closely at the tamer. It looks like a great pack gun, but I had the Winchester on hand so it didn't cost me anything but time :)

I would not have started this project without reading the regulations first.
Barrel is 18.5
OAL is 26.5

I gave myself half an inch on the side of caution to be safe.

Thanks for the heads up on my new prohibited weapon:rolleyes:
Read the regulations before you post - they are easy to find!

Hope to get out Sunday or Monday to give it a try. Slugs probably won't be on the agenda, but I will try some bird shot for sure!

I can't remember can you do the cutting or does a gun smith? Not judging....Asking. I have a single 12 Gauge I want to make a little shorter but don't want to have to pay a smith to do it.

chop 'er down if you feel comfortable doing it. dont need a smith, just measure twice, and make sure you stay legal.

Sweet it's a 30" barrel I want something better for Short range Upland game so Gonna cut her down to about 24" or 25" but she will still be good for other hunting. Not worth much but has a Good barrel Solid action and is already LIGHT and a perfect project gun.

And that little 20 Gauge is a very nice gun something I want to do to a 20 Gauge if I can ever find one that's cheap. Tell us how she handles when Fired and when taken out Hiking and Canoeing.

did you have to shorten the stock bolt?

Yes, I had a 4" bolt that worked nicely, but it is not hidden under the recoil pad anymore... I finished the gun with tung oil and made sure to seal up the cavity for the bolt really well.

Here is a pic of the bolt:

Now that you've proudly shown the world what you've done, what would you do differently?

(I have painful memories of pistol grip shotguns. Given the choice, you might have been wiser to leave the full stock ...)

I would of left the stock alone and just cut the barrel.. but thats just personal prefrance still looks nice...

^^^thanks

So I took the Winchester out today and put a few rounds through it!:D
It is allot of fun to shoot. Recoil is not a problem at all - which is nice. I had never shot a pistol grip before so I was not sure what to expect. I don't think it will take long to get comfortable shooting with it!

Here is a short vid of the firearm in action!

I didn't have time to figure out how to post the vid straight into the forum...

Thanks mmatt for putting up the video. It was a really fun project.
Instead of having an old shotgun sitting in the safe, it will now get some use!
