Shot size for coons

What shot size do you guys recommend for coons? they're getting into the corn, and my grandmothers flowers. I'm thinking 4 or 5 out of my 12 gauge. what are your thoughts?

I shoot 000BB at anything i am not trying to eat or save the pelt.

If I'm using a shotgun on raccoons my choice is #4Buck. Lately I've been using a .357 magnum or .38 Special. It's a little quieter than the shotgun particularly the .38 Special.

As a kid I shot hundreds of groundhogs with the 12 gauge and it took BB size shot or larger to kill them before they made it into their holes wounded, and that was with full choke. I'll stick with that for coons as well, 12 ga. heavy loads, full choke and BB or larger shot size, same for close range fox, coyotes, and other varmints.

use #2 or heavier. Some coons are HUGE!!, takes a good size pellet to kill em FAST. Shot a few with turkey shot, they didnt go far after that, but takes another one to put the lights out

unless you'd rather have them run off into the bushes and then die there, saves you digging a hole and burrying them...

Lead BB works very well.......since that you can't use it for geese anymore.
4 and 5 shot works good if you're close. Remember to wear rubber gloves when handling dead coon carcasses....possible rabies, nasty stuff.

Still a good idea to wear rubber gloves or just wash you hands after handling the carcass.
As long as your within 20 or 30ft, #4 or #5 lead shot will kill a coon dead.

Or even a bit farther...12ga or 20ga with one well placed shot will do the trick.

My thoughts exactly... quiet cheap & effective. If you don't think a long rifle will due it, step up to a 22 magnum.

Check under the Protection of Property section of the Ontario Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. If you are on your own property you have significantly more latitude than just the hunting regulations.

By far the most fun is a coonhound and a 22. With a 12 ga shot size minimum #2 they're pretty tough.
