Just received my Swiss Arms Classic Green rifle. Two inches from the end of the barrel is a raised portion with a grove in it. In this grove is a loose ring or a spring clip.
What is the purpose of this ring?

Practice rifle grenades can be found in surplus stores. All rifle grenades will fit as most are NATO standard (I believe 22mm ID)... I think Varsaw pact rifle grenades are also 22mm... As CANAM said, the spring clip holds the grenade in place by friction.

You need a blank cartridge to launch most grenades...

A Blank cartridge is a BLANK cartridge, The grenade cartridge is very different.

Makes no matter, Europeans use rifle grenades with bullet catchers in them. I don't recommend you try it thought.

Only a few rifle grenades have a bullet trap and can be fired with a regular cartridge (I know Meccar makes them). I said blank round just to make sure no one would use a regular round to fire their grenade...

BTW, most NATO rifles can fire rifle grenades as the flash hider is designed to fit and launch a grenade... You can launch a grenade with your AR is it has a Milspec flash hidder! With a proper grenade launching cartridge..

Don't the Swiss use an underbarrel 40mm grenade launcher?

More bells and whistles for customer demands?

Correct, the Swiss Army only uses the underbarrel 40mm launcher, which was first issued in '97.

FN "bullet trap" type rifle grenades were also trialed, but not purchased for some reason. There are some trial-models in the collection of the infantry school at Walenstadt.

To add the rifle grenade-ring to a barrel is no big deal so why not do it from the beginning?

I'm pretty sure that no one on here has privately owned live grenades. :p
